Out of all the black metal pioneers of the 80s, I'd say that Celtic Frost's schtick has aged better than anyone else's. They weren't interested in the role of Satan's cheerleaders like, oh, say Venom, Bathory, Sodom and even Tom G. Warrior's previous group, Hellhammer. Those guys seemed more intent on coming off as evil as possible without much subtly, providing a good amount of unintentionally amusing moments. While Celtic Frost's lyrical content and image were pretty unique, mixing ideas from different ancient religions and forms of paganism. Not that it put them on any pedestal for maturity, but gave them an aura of mystery and mystique.

This is an awesome album, but I just help laughing at the beginning of Danse Macarbe. Whatever the vocalist is trying to do, it certainly ain't working.

Has some killer riffs, but 'danse macabre' is very silly indeed. Apart from that, this album fucking rocks\m/

Bit long for an EP, isn't it?

This is too long to qualify as an EP, and everywhere else it is listed as a studio album anyway.

Pretty decent album, though. It definitely laid the groundwork for their 1985 seminal masterpiece.

Not in MA, they got it right as well. The original is actually 6 songs. Around 25 min long. That's the original european release, a bit later the american one got it with two extra tracks making it an LP. But that doesn't change anything. This IS an EP.

Like Mr Doctor siad this is originally an e.p. Not matter how many extra tracks there are on the subsequent re-releases.

Ahh, I didn't know that. My mistake, then.

Mediocre, boring and totally overrated.

Yes, but "To Mega Therion" is better than this.

By the way, Marcel, do you like "Monotheist", since you're a big Doom fan?

It's okay but nothing more and not really doom even though it is slow. Let's say it would be doom than it would be a very average album in the grander scheme of the doom genre.

OK. I don't like it at all but I think it's only normal, as I have no liking for Doom.
And what makes it not really Doom?

I don't care whether people consider this an EP or an LP, this is one of the greatest recordings ever. There's not a single thing which is overrated about early Frost. This was better than just about everything else released at the time. It blew me away in the 80's and it still sounds amazing now.

Yeah this is fun
I love the guitar sound. It reminds me of something, but I'm not sure what
("Danse Macabre" sounds ridiculous though)

The first thing one notices when listening this EP/album is the excellent sound. Extreme metal, in 1984, the underground. It is absolutely mystifying how Tom managed to pull out this excellent production. A crunchy guitar sound with drums not sounding shoddy either. Most 'extreme' metal bands in the 80s would've given an arm and a leg to have this sound. Even for today's standards, this production quality packs a punch, way better than the overtly sanitized production used these days.

The production on this album is so good that it makes it rather difficult to rate it. We are all sound fetishists to some extent. I place far more importance on the songwriting but even I can't help myself and react positively to such a great sound, especially from that era.

Into the Crypts of Rays shows how far ahead the Frosties were compared to their peers Sodom and the others. Clean, tight, powerful playing, nothing like the bloody amateur mess that is Sodom's first EP and first album. Dance Macabre is one of Tom's early experiments. Musically quite useless, but at least it succeeds in creating atmosphere. Unlike practically all of his later experiments which were duds.

Who says Pantera invented groove metal? Even the earliest thrash metal pioneers had it, as evidenced in Nocturnal Fear. At around 2:00 the song even features a very brief moment of free jazz.
