I was a little sceptical about this band; I tend to react with that particular feeling when it comes to French Black Metal since the year 2000, apparently people saw that Deathspell Omega was hitting the jackpot (in a metal average) with their typified Raw Black Metal and all of a sudden everyone there started sounding the same, filthy, desperately intense and really freaking raw? Turns out there's a band there that's able to create fresh music with mid-paced hooks and astonishing song writing without scarifying their sound, it's just fresh air in a really thick and suffocating fog.

Although I'm not a fan of the vocals, this album is incredible. a DsO copy done right is always a good thing
Edit, I know that copy might be an extreme word in above sentence but, whatever.

More like a streamlining of their sound done right I would say.

I told that copy is an extreme and strong word here but doesn't this album actually sound a little DsOish?

It resembles DsO's sound but structurally this is far simpler and straightforward I'd say.

So much hoo-ha around the Icelandic scene these days, when this is from 2007 and beats more or less anything coming from there. The sooner black metal gets past DsO the better I think. It's time for something new.

Not sure where that rant came from, but there it is. Anyway, this is still a great album. Nice, simple approach to songwriting, without the pretentious dissonances found in similar bands.

I have a feeling you'll be due for a big payout in the near future, and all the backers of Iceland will be selling their cars to pay for their rent =3

Fuck you! Iceland is amazing

It is and much of their bands (metal or not) are incredible... But suggesting an icelandic bm scene is kind of a weird thought which I disagree with (see Che's latest article). I just see it as a variation of the Deathspell Omega formula. It's not unique enought to make a whole scene out of it.

Well, yeah that is correct but I still think bands like Svartidaudi and Myspirning (not gonna search who it is written) reminds me a lot of DSO most of the time.

I can understan people sayiong that about Svarti but not about Mysph.... There is a huge difference there. If one can't hear that one should stop listening to metal.

Misþyrming have virtually no character to their sound whatsoever. Up there with the most overrated albums of last year. There's clearly an amount of DsO influence in it as well, though not as much as others.

Suggesting an icelandic bm scene is kind of a weird thought which I disagree with (see Che's latest article). I just see it as a variation of the Deathspell Omega formula. It's not unique enought to make a whole scene out of it.

Uniqueness is not necessarily required for the development of a "scene." Three things are, really, in my book

> Concentration of bands within the same general location
> Similar styles between the bands
> Close association between the bands

Icelandic black metal possesses all three of those already. There are indeed similar styles between bands, and several of them tour together frequently. Uniqueness is only required if the scene is really looking to take off and create new formulas that will soon become standard fare for new subsets of the genre in question. That is the one thing that Icelandic black metal lacks to some extent, and it will eventually have to move beyond if that is going to happen, as I said in the article. All the other seeds, however, have already been planted imo. I think it'll take another 5 years or so before one can solidly say either "yes, these guys have developed their own sound in Iceland" or "nope, it's just a variation of the DsO sound." And honestly, even right now, Icelandic BM definitely isn't just all a variation of DsO. Innovation is there, just on a small scale that needs to be cultivated more. And with some bands I actually think people somewhat overexaggerate the degree to which DsO has had an influence, especially Mispyrming and Carpe Noctem.
