The fact that this one was released in 1995 is striking.

I have the re-release, and all the best songs aren't even from the original.

This is one of the great hidden gems of black metal, perhaps because of its weirdness combined with the fact the band underwent multiple periods of inactivity and changed genres pretty dramatically from one album to the next. I didn't even hear it for the first time until Radical Research did a podcast on the band a year or two back. But I'm really glad I did.

This album is special and monumental in black metal history because it was one of the first albums that pushed black metal in this hybrid direction combining avant-garde, prog and folk elements. The people who stick to the purest form of black metal might not like this album. But, to me, this release sounds evolutionary. Especially the second track, En Skikkelse I Horisonten, is a beauty.
