Where do I even begin? Some reviews seem to write themselves, but Tyrant Of Death's latest album has me at a loss for words. No metaphors, no cheeky remarks. I've got nothing. But I will say this: Ascendancy is by far the best industrial metal album of 2014, and easily makes it into the top 5 I have heard, period.

Sounds like STY meets Anaal Nathrakh with a touch of Meshuggah. Pretty wild stuff.

Yeah it's okay. Barely scratching the surface of good.

Way better than what I've heard of him, still definitely not to my liking.

Checked it again
Admittedly, it has many good moments. The thing is that I really dislike the lead guitar work and keys. They tend to lessen the aggression and are inconsistent with the overall wall of the sound and purpose of the record. The album is also too long for its own good. Barely having diversity, the guy doesn't do much to justify the length.

I don't really consider this a wall-of-sound record. The production is exceptionally clear and the detailing is very distinct. It's honestly one of the most professionally recorded, expertly layered albums I've heard in a while because of how much detail shines through despite the onslaught of the guitars. I'd probably say The Amenta's 'n0n' is a more wall-of-sound version of this.

But at least you gave it another go

Listened to this a few weeks back and disliked it. Now it sounds just meh, basically for the same reasons as mz pointed out plus the drum patterns (annoying as hell !). The production could have done with a bit of dirt, just to give the impression everything ain't done by a computer.

I think it's exactly the point. Not all industrial has to be dirty à la early AN.

I've revisited this album a few times, and each play-through I give it is equally boring. Really just not my cup of tea I suppose, but it's clearly not a bad album.

Here's my five word review: You win this round, Ascendancy.

This is enough to make me forget your Botch/TT comparison. Take off your tinfoil hat and come join us, we're sipping expensive whiskey in vintage club armchairs in the very select ToD Appreciation Society. This album, seriously. It's the Optimus Prime of industrial.

Ugh my comment sounds like one of Cynic's.

I was glad that this was at the bottom of the list. Great way to round out the category. I'll take my whiskey on the rocks.

This band, even this album, makes up for AN and Meshuggah's crappiness in recent times, and fills the void left by SYL.

It's not an average album at all. So many good moments, and as it goes further the good moments get better and better, I love those melodic moments of it mixed with all those driving riffings and their solo guitars, I couldn't expect it from an Industrial band. Big thumb up !

what is SYL & AN ? I think we should never put this awesomeness next to wankery of Meshuggah.

SYL= strapping young lad.
Also, we shouldn't put the genius meshuggah next to this boring album.

NOPE! Genius is such a heavy load to put on shoulders of Meshuggah. And this is not boring, I can't see how this may sound boring. Really, I'm not that easily satisfied and by far this is one of the bests of 2014.

This is crazy good. Reminds me of AN, though it is a bit lengthy and repetitive at times. Regardless, this album is a pure adrenaline injection and real good industrial metal.

Enjoyable style, but the riffs sound like they've all been cut from the same loaf - not enough variety. Also, not sure if it's just me, but the trebly vocals hurt my ears.

I probably won't be coming back to this band until they release a new album...which - judging by the time between each of their releases - won't be long. I'll just go back to listening to SYL and AN separately for now
