Those who follow Hjel on Facebook probably know that Kalte Asche is an album that essentially got written twice. According to the one-man project's mastermind, Max, at one point he threw most of the material he'd written in the trash and started over, to create an album that was more than "just OK." How good or bad the first version of the album would have turned out to be, we'll never know, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that the hard work put into Hjel's first album paid off and the result is an impressive debut. Read more ›› |

This is a solid album. And while the word "solid" is sometimes used as "decent" or "acceptable", I don't mean that at all. I mean this album doesn't disappoint in any way. Is it a masterpiece? Probably not. However, most debut albums can only dream of being this good. So, "solid" as in "well worth multible listens and perhaps even being added to one's collection." Massive  Also, sorry again about the lousy 5 euros on Bandcamp. Broke as fuck right now.

Max just updated Hjel's FB, saying that he is writing new music. Went back and listened to this album again after that (very awesome) piece of news and I like the album even more now than I did originally. In fact I think I should've rated it at least an 8 in my review, this album really is very good and I can't wait for the next one.
