Amoris Umbra is a Chilean band playing Gothic Metal with some Doom Metal overtones, this is their second offering after one demo in 2001. This Ep entitled "Brisa Del Sur" (breeze from the south), has only has 4 songs, but each one of them has its thing.
Chile along with Brazil is one of the most prominent Metal countries in South America, spawning bands from diverse genres like Doom, Death Black and Power, Amoris Umbra tries to follow the tradition showing us their mix of Gothic and Doom Metal.
The artwork is really good I must say, the boat and the whole graphic design looks excellent, the whole Demo is singed in Spanish, thing that I found great, because I understand perfectly everything!
Anyway, The Mcd kicks off with "Traición" (treason), a cool song, slowly builds up with nice melodies and the great voice of Berta Valenzuela, the some has some catchy sections too, "Fruto Del Pecado" (fruit of sin) is more up-tempo and agile than the rest of the songs, and I would even dare to say that it has some eighties influences, some growls in the back can be heard, first mistake, the growls are totally useless and horrible.
Title track "Brisa Del Sur" is a great song, the duet clean male voice vs female vocals is something that we've heard before, but still, this is good, last song "Hijo De La Noche" (son of the night) is another duet between both clean vocals, some whispers and shrieks can be heard here, the shrieks here are way better than the growls in the second song.
My problem with this album is that becomes somewhat tedious after a couple of listens, while songs are different from each other, every one of them has the same spirit, no new elements, no surprises, that with the bad production and the sound (which is really poor) results in a average experience.
A band with ideas, they just need to polish them and find the proper economical support to afford a good production, best of lucks to Amoris Umbra, and I hope to hear a full-length soon.
