I don't know what these guys were thinking when they named their band Cantar, but if they know a little Spanish they might know that Cantar means "to sing".
This sextet from Belgium was found in 1994, recorded a couple of Demos, and after some line-up changes they entered the studio once again to record this self-titled album.
Cantar alternates Doomy atmospheric parts, full of keyboards and violins, with some more aggressive and almost Blackish parts, me? I prefer the slow and melancholic parts, because the use of the violin and the keyboards is outstanding.
7 songs, each one a lengthy epic Doom Metal piece, paired with a more than decent production, I'm impressed that these days are more the self-released albums that have good quality production.
Special mention to the fantastic band logo, is just great, so great that the band decided that their logo would be their front cover, sure they like it, and me too.
First song "Lament", divides into 3 songs, songs are varied, but always following the formula of the band, the fast paced versus emotional parts, after a while it may get into your nerves, that's why you have to listen this a couple of times, the real treasure of this album lays under some spins.
I won't mention the killer songs, because I found every song enchanting in a way, although some of the faster parts didn't sounded good for me, kudos for the enchanting violin and for the way that they handled those slow, atmospheric parts, as for the fast parts, any band can make aggressive stuff, is the melancholic stuff that is hard to create.
