Something I was uncomfortable reading in regards to "Gnaw Their Tongues".
Well, let's check.
Quote: When people think of symphonic metal they really ought to think more about music of this type. Melodious, complex, defiant and dark.

I don't think I've ever seen the original Fantasia, just Fantasia 2000. So I watched "The Rite of Spring" because of this interview. Magnificent! With scenes of cosmic nebulae, primordial volcanic explosions, eerie underwater life, dinosaurs fighting for survival, and dinosaurs crawling through the desert towards extinction, one can see a lot of influences for possible metal projects.
I've also never listened to these two bands before (except maybe a fleeting listen to Deha, which I don't completely remember). A very dissonant approach, but I've always loved picking apart every layered element in metal. Gnaw Their Tongues's contribution takes an approach very similar to the original piece with imposing dark ambience. Deha, in contrast, is very vile and aggressive indeed! The vocals are really awesome, like you say, and the layers of musicianship pile onto each other to crush the listener into primordial dust!
I agree that we need more symphonic stuff like this, truly capturing the original bombastic and punishing appeal of those orchestras. I guess I'll have to listen to some more Gnaw Their Tongues and Deha!

Good luck getting into Deha; in 5ish years, he's racked up over 40 albums, EPs, splits and collaborations under his name, most of which are stylistically all over the place! We deservingly nominated Ave Maria II in ex doom in 2021 and Netzach gave a fitting review to Decadanse last year, but the other release I've heard of his was a blackgaze one, so who knows what to expect from any given release
I've never been into GTT, but the collaboration album they did with Dragged Into Sunlight is very good

Ah yeah, I remember now. The Decadanse review is where I first heard of the band. I don't remember what I thought of the album, so now I'm listening to it again!
Since I'm exploring blackened sludge right now, that GTT-DIS collab sounds promising. Will check out! Thanks!

Seemed like GtT had hit a lull for a while so I’m glad they finally put something awesome out again.

Oh this was real fun! I have to admit I never really listened to much of Stravinski but should probably catch up. Regardless, this one was thoroughly enjoyable.

Your post was a reminder that I forgot to add a link to that particular section of Fantasia. Now it has been added as a link in my review for more people to see. The Rite Of pring is so fucking avantgarde metal without being metal you know? I absolutely love that movie. So I fully recommend you to watch the whole thing. It has some very dark moments like the first composition Toccata in fugue in D Minor by Bach and of course the Night On Bald Mountain scene. Which is actually a composition by Mussorgsky that has been turned into black metal by Marduk in their album Heaven Shall Burn...
I have not tried to dive into Déhà's work yet but I think I'm very knowledgeable on GTT. If you enjoyed his take on symphonic darkness I would gladly recommend you An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood (It's my all time favorite GTT album atm), L'Arrivée De La Terne Mort Triomphante as well as Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus. All three have a very cinamatographic approach with a bombastic style but with super dense and detailed textures. Although An Epiphanic] is the most balanced and creepy one.

I had some problems during his 2016-2020 period but I Speak The Truth... was pretty good imo. But yeah this is a return to what I've come to know and love from GTT in what I call his "golden age" (2007-2012).

To be frank I haven't listened to more of his works besides The Rite Of Spring so I'm with you there. Fascinating compositor. Glad you found enjoyment on this work as much as I did!

For what it’s worth I haven’t listened to much of his stuff but I really like A Fleur de Peau V earlier this year, it’s very melodic but also intense. Nothing I’ve heard from him sounds similar. Déhà that is.

Finally checked it and this was really cool. Though I enjoyed Déhà’s side much more than GTT
