Why do I keep hearing bouncy hip-hop and nu metal in Thy Art is Murder? It has something to do with the syncopated, rhythmic guitar parts and triggered bass drum samples that create this hammering, thumping-like feel in unison. I keep imagining if one were to slow the music down, have someone rapping the lyrics and then read how Pitchfork would be drooling over it such that the web browser goes all slimy and gooey.
Thy Art is Murder is one of those bands, using a battalion of compressors and low tuned guitars, where much of the dynamics and definition of the music is squeezed to serve the punch, pounding of chests, the growls in unison in songs like "Death Squad Anthem", the thumpcore of our times. Maybe we listen to Thy Art is Murder for this reason, to have that slushy low-tuned tone blow against our faces?
I hear a certain formula in every album. The strong songs are the first 1-5 tracks on the record, and the rest fade into a unorganic bashing of thumpy sludge until reaching what I call fatigue swamp. This is especially highlighted in Human Target, where the first four songs strike like a deadly tank with a solid goal. The grooves, changes in vocal output and man... You simply can't deny songs like "Death Squad Anthem", "Human Target" and "Make America Hate Again" kick ass.
Human Target is where the band actually murders a little, gets out of the "Thy Art Is Average Sound Porridge" box. It's too bad I still don't think the band is particularly great overall; listening to all albums in a row, and then going a bit back and forth was a bad bad idea and a very ear-numbing experience. I only felt numb and hollow after a full discography run.

Never a band to shy away from speaking their minds, Human Target sees Thy Art Is Murder rage against perceived injustices like never before; sounding like brutal catharsis for the band, you get caught in the crossfire. Thy Art's deathcore roots are still the basis from which they launch off their invective sonic attacks, but with them now showing a level of maturity that has been refined with each subsequent record. This album sounds like a culmination of years of work and dedication that found renewed purpose with all that is going on in the world. Read more ›› |
