I must admit, I was very sceptical about this album before I heard it, and about the band in general. Translated to English, my scepticism would sound like this: "A Greek Black Metal band? Pfft, crap! That's reserved for Norwegians and other Scandinavians! For Christ's sake (notice the irony about Christ), these guys don't even wear corpse-paint!" From the very 1st minute of playing Theogonia, I realised how very wrong I was. Not only is it great, but it has certain innovations I never heard in Black Metal.

First of all I want to mention that I never focused to specific categories of the metal music. I always liked to listen to all of the metal genres from heavy to black, from folk to progressive, from power to gothic etc. My criteria are strongly related to the emotions and feelings a specific release can cause to me. I really believe in the "if you like it, listen to it" dogma!

Deeply impressed by this album. I've only listened to Aealo and thought it was the most powerful thing I've ever heard, but this one is even better.

Great album, But for me it is ruined by the guitar tone, cant put my finger on it, almost what you would expect to hear from a power metal release. hmmmm...

In my opinion, this is the epitome of melodic/folk-inspired black metal. Their best album by far. I hope they write an album of this caliber again.

I don't dig the increased rock structures and production. Some of the riffs are just annoying too (especially the ne-ner-ne-ner oscillating one on track 4). However, there are some cool new elements that I do like a lot. Just poor execution imo.

Hello, thefrail86.

I've been had. I was wondering when someone would start connecting the dots. Trying to build a miniature dynasty here.

I love metal, I find new/old shit to add to my collection everyday. Beginning to end, incredible album. The choral elements are not overblown, just right! I've been looping the shit out of this one.

This album is perfection in my eyes. Not as purely black or hardcore as their earlier stuff, yet better and harder than the subsequent Aealo and Rituals. It's just a perfect album in general, and I love every single track on it.

Every year or so I'll give this one a spin and see if it's as great as I remember, it always is from beginning to end. The tracks are also varied enough to keep it from getting too samey like some black metal albums can. This album really is perfect IMO, I wish they could capture this again in their more recent releases which are a bit to "chanty" for my liking.......

One of my favourite ever black Metal albums, super enjoyable. It's one of those rare albums that I can listen to over and over again without skipping any tracks, because every song has memorable melodies and enjoyable riffs. I really like those chanting vocals too, they seem to add a sinister tribal effect.
It's also worth mentioning that "He The Aethyr" has one of the most headbangable riffs I've ever listened too

Very overrated IMO. Had a lot of mediocre riffs, and vocals that I personally didn't care for. Yoth Iria's new album was way better. I liked "Enuma Elish" a lot though.

Finally Rotting Christ made a good ablum. I guess we are hard to satisfy if an album needs to have 8.8 to be listenable.

I don't get why this is so praised, the melodies aren't as memorable and it just feels like a pretty good effort compared to their awesome first 3 albums.

Can I just say I adore the last three tracks?!!! The guitar sound in Threnody is just unbelievably perfect, and the use of Middle Eastern chanting in Enuma Elish makes it quite unique, the whole song is very delicious!
