It has to be good. They can't afford to lose their fans anymore. They have tortured us even longer than Metallica did. I think they finally realized it.

Arise In Might!
Some really great songwriting here, really reminiscent of something from The House of Atreus. A Song of Possession sounds straight off that album. Unfortunately, this sounds worse than a demo (understatement), recorded in David's bedroom with guitar pro instrumentation. I'd love to hear this properly recorded with actual musicians and instruments. I also wish he'd leave gaps of more than 5 seconds without having to wail and squeal. It's not as bad as with the last album but it's still there. Voice isn't quite what it was, let those MIDI instruments breathe a bit

After the last two albums I didn't expect much. And man, was I surprised! DeFeis is a brilliant composer and you can tell he has a passion for classical music. The whole DIONYSUS album sounds less like a metal album a la Invictus, but almost like an opera based on heavy metal, but also deviating from time to time. I immediately had the feeling that I was listening to a mixture of the two Atreus albums and Visions of Eden. The more I listen to it, the more I like it - even if I understand that many can't do anything with it. For me DIONYSUS is the best Virgin Steele album since Atreus 2!

I expected a total disaster, but actually it's not that bad. David DeFeis is still an excellent songwriter, the album just sounds garbage. I don't get why the man doesn't just start writing stuff for other artists and earn his living that way or something. Making music like this is just a waste of talent.

Can't help but be suspicious of a guy who does his best to look like Joey Demaio, when he already sounds like Eric Adams.
Who in their right mind would strive to look like one of the biggest douchebags in metal history? 🤣🤣🤣

P.S. Never liked his music BTW but I admired his persistence.

Finally a real VS album again. Yes, of course, its not comparable to Noble Savage, but thats ok for me. I kinda dig the whole symphonic-esoteric-stuff that has been going on since Visions.

Yeah it's actually not bad. Production is mind-numbingly awful of course, but the actual musical content is pretty good.

I agree with everything. It is such a shame that this sounds like a hello kitty recording; musically, it could have been easily the best release since The House Of Atreus. And his vocals have deteriorated significantly.

Very true, I can't for the life of me understand why he's skimming on at least a producer who could at least get them to sound decent. Guitars sound like cement blocks instead of sculptures, the orchestral elements and keys sound like they're from the 90s, and I feel the vocal performance should've been more tight.

I lile vocals but to me this us guitar hero song writing, not real metal sound to me, somehow something us not right whit sound, but then if it would be done 20 years ago it would be good. Better as previously,

The songs feel all over the place and the performance and mixing is just way too cheap. However the music is not bad, it's a happy suprise that you actually get a bit of the VS magic you long for but at the same time it's such a letdown that the end product is so "homemade". How hard can it be for a band with their legacy to get a decent producer and record it in a professional studio?

The vocal processing on this is suffocating; it doesn't even sound like DeFeis half the time. And it's not even an issue with his voice declining, which would be entirely understandable given the years he's put in - when he gives you a clear picture of his voice once every thirty seconds, it's clear that he's still got a great deal of versatility, control, and strength. Maybe not as much as at his height, and who would ever be able to boast that, but enough that I would be perfectly happy getting a normal Virgin Steele album that worked around his changing voice. The problem here is that he's drowning in weird adulteration all the time, and that just doesn't sound very good. His screams on "The Ritual Of Descent" and "Unio Mystica" don't even sound like a human - I feel like I'm listening to a particularly annoying ambulance with how much autotune there is on them.

When you factor in how every other instrument sounds like it was made out of a shoebox and played with a rubber mallet, the overall effect is just pathetic. I'd be lying if I said it didn't have a weird appeal of its own, but I have to dissociate this from Virgin Steele pretty severely; it's definitely impressive for a bedroom project. Somebody give Wintersun's jacuzzi studio to this guy, because this is easily one of the worst-produced albums from an established band that I've heard in a long time.

The writing is great, though. If I could listen to this album recorded by a real band, I'd be pretty happy with it. Honestly, it's at a point where I could see myself listening to this again, as long as I prepare myself beforehand to listen to an album that has worse audio quality than your average black metal demo, and there are times throughout the album when it sounds vaguely presentable.
