A less notorious version of this album was the original release, the Norwegian/English version. The same tracks but just different titles. The names of the same tracks on this version are:

01. Burzum
02. Jesu Död
03. Beholding The Daughters Of Firmament
04. Decrepitude I

A pair of empty eyes, on a face absent of any trace of...life?

This is the image that comes to my mind as the first chord of Dunkelheit is picked, and persists, with different variations, throughout this jewel. An incomplete, and yet, mature and developed album, Filosofem must be the Count's deepest creation.

Most of its charm comes from the way it has been recorded. Black Metal has always been about atmosphere, and honestly, one can almost see the darkness while listening to Filosofem.

Nah... I think the first 4 are amazing, the fourth song is eerie as fuck. Only the other 2 are the weird ones since the last one is the same as song 4 which is kind of like... dumb.

I just want to know why Varg thought that a 20 minute + drone song was a worthy addition. I like the tune, but don't want to listen to it for more than 7 minutes, say. I might see the merit in track 4 if it weren't followed by 2 clusterfucks. Give me drums! I've always thought of this as two albums. A double-feature. The first is Vertigo and the second is Big Momma's House.

Well, I disagree Gebrechlichkeit .I. is perfect as it is, there's no use for drums as I can't even think about how they should sound to fit the slow and eerie atmosphere. If I could change the album... I would have the first 4 tracks unchanged, the fifth would be 10 minutes and the last one wouldn't exist. There we got a nice 41 minutes album, fair enough for me.

musicalkaratekid - 30.10.2011 at 15:08
Rating: 8 I only have one problem with this album-and that is,that its just too damn long. 'Rundgang...', if it was only eight minutes long like the others, then i might have liked it more. Also,it could have done without 'Gebrechlichkeit 2'. Those weaknesses aside, this still contains all the key ingredients that make burzum such a good band.

Yeah, when the drums come in is really one of those "shit just got real" moments. I was also quite blown away the first time I heard it. This could very well be my favorite Burzum album. It has imo the best production and the best vocals by faaaaaar. I really like how the vocals sound here thanks to the production.

Truth be told I haven't even finished the album :/ I just get to that song and then switch it, because I know that the rest can't be that good

I find the first 4 songs flat out amazing. The only reason I don't give this a strong 9 is because of the last two tracks that are unnecessary.
First track is simply a classic BM anthem, second one is blood-pumping and addictive as heroin, Third track shows more of that slightly melancholic vibe Burzum has at times and the fourth one is downright sinister.

You should definitely stop fucking around and give the full (read: first 4 tracks) a go without stop.

Will do on the bus ride home today.
that's the only bonus to having a long bus ride, getting to listen to an hours worth of music.

If I want to give a cd a dedicated listen I preffer the confort of my bedroom in complete darkness. But bussride is fine I guess... as long as there's no one in the buss or at least not anyone that makes too much noise.

I usually lay down and almost fall asleep

It's nice though, and it's not too loud.

Nice, my case isn't too bad either. around 90 min. Bus-Train-Bus to my university. Pretty calm overall. So I go with my discman with one long or two short cds.

When it comes to good albums, it's worthy to give them a go in many different environments.

I'm not discussing that, I agree. But I preffer my very first listen to be without any possible distractions.

Rating: 10 Have to agree with the Jesus Tod riff/drums coming in.... it's one of those special moments in metal that you can't even describe with words given the amount of awesomeness it emanates.

If only Rundgang... was 4 or 5 minutes long, this would be perfect. It's still my favorite Burzum with Det Som Engang Var

Indeed, I don't mind that song at all. It could have been 5 min and I wouldn't mind at all.
Vombatus - 30.05.2012 at 21:40
Rating: 10 It's a nice song, very sooting and makes a good contrast with the rest of the album. I just get fed up at about 7 minutes

Rating: 9 Epic album, you can hear its influences everywhere. Rundgang..... is indeed far too long, get a few minutes in and skip it, love the instrumental stuff on the rest of the album tho. the production on this is perfect for the sound, almost to the extent of being just as haunting as the actual music.

Well yeah it is true I am just getting into Black Metal but I quite like some bands already. Mayhem, Satyricon, Marduk and even Det Som Engang Var from count himself. But this album is just bad, in every way imo. I definetely wouldn't count this among traditionally sounding BM albums.

Rating: 9 Fuck, all Varg had to do was cut out Gebrechlichkeit II and this album would probably be my favourite black metal album. The droning room filling tone of the guitars is just incredible. The pad synth on Dunkelheit is too eerie as well. Drumming is so simple but so effective.

"Rundgang" ain't a bad tune but it sure as hell can't be 25 mins long. This would have been a solid 9 for me if Rundgang was kept around 7 mins and serve as an intermission for "Gebrechlichkeit I" which should have been the last track (and the second part, as you say... couldn't be deleted alltogether). That would have left us with around 40 mins of one hell of an album.

Oops, I meant to add Rundgang in as well. I usually shut the album off right at the end of the first Gebrelesktikaiklalkeit song.

Heh, yeah I thought it was a bit odd. As I said, I actually enjoy that ambient tune but I'd keep it somewhat short but also before Gebrechlichkeit I since that one works for a good ending.
First 4 songs are all fucking brilliant though.

Rating: 10 Filosofem. I will give it 10. 8 years ago when I owning this album for me it's so fucking weird... particularly: Decrepitude I, Rundtgåing, and Decrepitude II.
I realized after I was repeat all track by many times, the atmosphere so glommy!! but realized again I like going to heaven or whatever beautiful place.

Rating: 9 I can lose myself in the ambiance of this album. The atmosphere that this songs can provide is really outstanding. A solid start that takes you in a journey through the darkest corners of music, but at the same time is really relaxing.

It goes to long sometimes, but if you are like me, you will hear it on a loop many times and have nice dreams. A great work of the count, heavy, gloomy and somber, you know you'll have a good night.
Wingtorte - 23.11.2014 at 15:52
Rating: 10 Don't really get the criticism of the final two tracks on Filosofem. Considering the atmospheric and ambient tracks Varg had on the previous albums, Rundgang and Gebrechlichkeit II aren't so out of place. Varg had talked about it a while back saying the intention behind those kinds of tracks was to portray a kind of dream world/dream-like state. Personally, I always thought these sorts of tracks worked really perfectly especially on albums like Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem. The mix between raw bm and more atmospheric sounds is pretty good. Used to find those two albums in particular really relaxing to fall asleep to at night.
