The sound pathways that Tiamat chose to walk with "A Deeper Kind of Slumber" is a beautiful marriage of gothic and psychedelic rock influences. Keeping the emotional charge and a bit of the sound of gothic rock (even on the cover of the album Johan Edlund reminds of the well-known picture of Rozz Williams, former of the legendary death rock band Christian Death, holding withering flowers) enriching it with many psychedelic rock influences and ideas Tiamat create a dreamy atmospheric album. Deeply emotional and utterly filled with inspiration, "A Deeper Kind Of Slumber" won't let you down but for sure will accompany you through many sleepless nights with its serene esoteric atmosphere.

This is a great album. I can't say I like all the songs equally but overall it's a highly enjoyable feel-good album due to the incredible atmosphere.

Dark ambient? Oh wait, it's you. Nevermind.

On a serious note, if this is anything it's gothic. To me it comes off as pretty experimental. Really unusual, unique sound.

DARK AMBIENT (stressed one more time)

Have you ever even listened to a dark ambient band?

This is largely, and conventionally, structured with melodies, choruses, prominent vocals, and is percussion driven. These are all things which dark ambient is not (with the odd exception of a few tribal-beat driven ones, like Sephiroth). Furthermore the tone isn't even in keeping with what dark ambient is. This has ambient qualities, not dark ambient. Tim Hecker, not Atrium Carceri, but even so having a spacey, atmospheric background doesn't make something ambient either. There is nothing dark, nor dark ambient about this album. Reiterating it in capitals doesn't make it any truer.

A lot...one of my favorite genres.
My No.1 Dark Ambient album is still Nightmare Lodge's Blind Minature by far.

You're free to give it a name then.
Strange and uneasy dreamy atmosphere is considered Dark to me, no matter there are vocals or not. I don't restrict music the way you do.

Yes you do, or you wouldn't be barking at people ITS DARK AMBIENT. The difference is that you restrict music in a total arbitrary way devoid of possible argument.

Tiamat - A Deeper Kind Of Slumberekt ^^

Anyway as a dark ambient record it's utter garbage. As a gothic record with other influences its pre-cool yo.

Gothic style is naturally dark, it goes without saying...it's utter garbage to say that it's a gothic without dark elements.
By the way, you guys take genres as adjectives or nouns ?
In music I always consider genres as adjectives so that how I categorize them is based on how I "feel".

I didn't say it doesn't have dark elements fyi. These dark elements don't necessarily classify it as Dark Ambient. A truck has many car elements yet it's not classified as a car.

Nouns because two albums within the same genre can emit feelings on opposite sides of the spectrum. If i used adjectives then I wouldn't classify a lot of black metal as black because it doesn't make me feel how 'black' presumably should. Also some people use 'sad' music to alleviate times of unhappiness. Some people can't bear upbeat music when they've lost hope. These types of reactions can will usually lead to an 'agree to disagree' argument with someone whose mindset is the complete opposite (ie sad in life--> play upbeat music). There are many external variables that go into how some initially feels that consequently can dictate how they react to an album. I guess you could say it throws out a lot of objectivity. I'm rambling now BLAH...

Thanks for changing your mind !

Certainly this is dark-gothic and it's somehow very close to dark ambient as it keeps on stressing the state of euphoria. I would say this is a dark ambient (primary) album infused with gothic elements (secondary). I find both genres fit in although it tends to be more on dark ambient side.

Yeah...there are many kinds of black, pure black, black thrash, blackened death, black folk...so happy to see your great improvement. You need to "feel" the details sometimes. Someone (like Jooe) named music in a mechanical way leads to great mistakes.

Nope, it's this kind of, as I said, entirely arbitrary focus that leads to mistakes because it is based on the fallacy that people feel things in the same way, or are empathic. Genres are sets of rules governed and documented by observation, comparison and example. They are not determined by "feeling". Unless...

To me this album feels calming and relaxing, therefore I dub this "Relaxo-Goth" music. If you don't agree then you are feeling things wrong and making mistakes.

Well, it might be "considered" as such to you, but a "strange and uneasy dreamy atmosphere" is by no means the same as "dark". Maybe that's your association, but it would be highly subjective so using it as a genre-tag isn't correct then.

Don't worry. We (Joe and you mainly, though) have already proved him wrong, no matter what he thinks.

For the record, I would call it experimental/atmospheric gothic, or something. What about that genre-tag?

Yeah I did, but not all the messages. Too much of a hassle.

Anyway, this album has loads of variety sound-wise, so if you're looking for a rather experimental sounding song, try The Desolate One or Only in My Tears it Lasts. You want a really atmospheric gothic sounding song, then try Atlantis as a Lover, Phantasma de Luxe or Mount Marilyn. Marvelous stuff.

This was an interesting approach and I somewhat like it -- as I like almost all their albums in some way.
I recall songs such as Phantasma de Luxe, Alteration X10, and especially Mount Marilyn standing out -- but last spin must be more than 10 years ago.
As for the rest of the songs, more ok-ish than really good.
And, hey, naturally not at all even close to the ingenious Wildhoney, or earlier albums.
