Tracks 1-8 = musical, prog-metal genius. Track 9 = pretty good. Last 2 tracks...meh.
To be completely honest, with this album I thought A7X would be the next DT. I rejoyced that I now had a band to take over the prog-metal hole in my heart whenever DT decided to hang it up (this was years ago and DT was still strong and no one foresaw MP's departure. Anyway...). This album has it all - the hard, the soft, the prog-ness...
And then Critcal Acclaim came along and A7X sold-out.
The End.

Prog metal genius. Did I honestly just read that. And you thought they'd rival the likes of Dream Theater?

Yes. Yes, you did. That is exactly how strong I felt about this album, their writting abilities and the direction of A7X back then.
Now they sound like a bunch of emo kids screaming without direction. I almost dared not to post such a strong positive thing about them because of who they are now, but I decided to give'em props for COE. Plus, I thought you didn't even listen to DT...?

This is obviously the band's most popular album, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad album either. I really like how each and every song is memorable and accessible, but not so much that it could be accused of an absolute 'sell-out'. The only thing that doesn't really impress me much is the vocals, but even then Shadows seems to make it work alongside the other albums most times.

I liked the idea of "Bat Country" being a reference to Hunter S Thompson but the video and song are one of the most cringe-worthy things I've ever seen. Apparently this is the last song they play in their live shows so supposedly this is their best, which I hope is not, because that song sucks

Their only album I can still give a proper listen to. So much more interesting than any of their other albums, and The Wicked End is also by far my favourite track of theirs.
