In the blink of an eye, 4 years have passed since the not-so-critically-acclaimed The Heart Of Everything. Being lambasted for being sold out and radio oriented, it was also the metal album that drew my attention to the genre of music called heavy metal. Having moved on to other more obscure spectrums of the genre, it has been a couple of years since an album with the symphonic metal tag slapped on it came out that I can truly enjoy. With an album cover that seems to cater towards a much younger audience and an announcement about a concept album based on some comic series, I confess that my expectations couldn't have been lower.

Love this album, the song writing is good and the chorus is what a chorus should be. not bother by whether this is metal or not metal, the end result is entertaining. and the vocal is awesome!

I can't decide if this album is better than The Heart of Everything or not. It's just too different. I will say this though: it's certainly more streamlined. This is one hell of a consistent album.. possibly their most streamlined effort since Enter?

AND. There is something definitely bad ass about an old lady whispering about "the powers of hell" during a heavy track. There just is.

"Faster" is an OK song considering the chord progressions and melodies are almost exactly the same as in "Wicked Game" (by Chris Isaak, covered by H.I.M.)

I don't like. And that has nothing to do with them going more and more in the pop-rock direction, since I quite enjoy some pop-rock from time to time. The whole album just gets boring very fast.
I gave it 3 or 4 spins and I can't remember anything that stood out to me (besides the "faster and faster and faster and faster..." ). To me all the songs sound pretty much the same and it's all just a big blend of... boredom

True metal??? comercial??? radio friendly???....its only music...who cares??? many bands still in the same sound and playing in live concerts the same songs again across the years.....are they musicians?? no...only a poor band without ideas....but many people calling this "true musicians"....guys....be free from prejudices...enjoy the music...its simple.
this album.....i really like it......more than the silent force

I find myself liking this more and more. I don't think it's gonna be a lifelong romance, but it's definitely making me smile.

This an example, how band can become commercial...

yes, i agree. they really have become commercial and honestly, i'm a bit disappointed because of it. feels like they were doing it only for money, money and once again - money; as if they weren't really enjoying what they are doing. i might be wrong ofcourse, i don't know the real reason, but it's just how i see it.

as for the album - yeah well, i must admit i like some songs very much

I love this album! The song writing is outstanding, and the vocals are so moving. I never thought I would listen to this type of music, or anything with female lead vocals for that matter.

"This is SO not metal!"

Well of course it's not metal! Within Temptation hasn't been metal since Mother Earth. They're Symphonic Rock! Their FaceBook and Twitter pages both list their genre as "Symphonic Rock", and their website refers to them as a "rock act". Lead singer Sharon even said in an interview "we consider ourselves more a symphonic rock band". So there you have it.

As for the album, I love it! The 1980s influence is very apparent, yet they still manage to sound fresh and new!
My favourite songs are "Faster", "Shot in the Dark", "Sinéad", "A Demon's Fate" and "Stairway to the Skies".

Does anyone else hear what sounds like Westerholt doing backing vocals in the chorus of Murder?

"Shot In The Dark" is such cheese...but you gotta love dat chorus!

Edit: "Faster" is also such an awesome track - reminds me of HIM. The rest, however, is pretty much junk barring "Fire And Ice" and "Middle Of The Night"...

Disappointing ,the album lacks the symphony which is the best thing WT are known for ,if the songs were sung by a male vocalist it would be good but Sharon voice doesn't fit

This album is some kind of pop rock, single Faster reminds me of Roxette's joy ride, real decline from what this band did before, I could pretty much listen to u2 if I want to listen to songs where one cannot be distinguished from another

What's wrong with pop rock? Enjoyable album, just not metal, it doesn't mean it's bad.
