Melodic Death Metal band In Flames are considered as the founders of the so-called "Gothenburg Sound" along with Dark Tranquillity , opposed to the "Florida Sound" . In other words, this term was created to oppose two different kinds of Death Metal styles. With the album Colony, In Flames definitely shows us how to define again a new style of Death Metal: a full package of thrashy guitar melodies and both clean and death voices; and overall, a complete set of outstanding metal anthems.

Yepp "Man Made God" should be with vocals imo. Great melody in that song.

I enjoy this album a lot and this genre is not even my thing; the music is concise, straightforward, no wankery, things are in balance (heaviness and melody).

I wish they would re-record Lunar Strain...

Just in case Fridén is reading this, I'll just comment... Do Not Re-Record Lunar Strain!

Hahahaha! They should re-record it with the old vocals, not the new vocals! Or else, it would be ruined!

Average stuff, IMO these songs are just bad or average at best. The only good thing here is melodies of "Zombie Inc." and "Pallar Anders Visa". And BTW the original "Behind Space" is way better.

Its so hard to decide which IF album is my favourite, but in the end I would probably go with this. Has some of their best melodies and the production gives it the necessary punch.

Been revisiting this one, and other IF albums from that time, confirming my latest assessment.
Colony is far away from their best (which would be Jester race and Clayman for me, by far!).
Embody the invisible is among my all-time Top 5 IF.
And Ordinary story is also outstanding here.
The rest is partly good (Zombie) and partly mediocre (Scorn), certainly not bad stuff, but not particularly remarkable either.
This is completely different with Clayman IMO, an album that can be compared quite well with Colony.
They are both from the same time, they have kind of the same style, sound, pace, direction.
With Clayman I enjoy each and every song, not really a filler to find there for me.

Here i am listening to it 20 years later (1999 - 2019) and it still sounds fantastic, its trully a timeless masterpiece. Also love the lyrics that have quite a deep meaning.
"Man made god" has to be one of the most fantastic IF songs, with its meaning, the energetic instrumentals and rhythm and the acoustic guitar parts.

Hard to choose as all songs are great, but considering rhythm + lyrics -
Scorn
Ordinary Story (ever more becoming the reality to most people)
Resin (fantastic guitar)
Behind space '99 (hp lovecraft homage)

Embody The Invisible is such an immensely hype song, every time it comes around on shuffle I get so stoked (such as right now). The rest of the album sadly never clicked with me to the same extent

These were exactly my words some 2 or 3 years ago.
Now, lately, I have come to enjoy other songs from this album (e.g. Ordninary story). I would hold the album much higher today than I did back then. Still, far away from best IF for me (Jester race, Clayman).

Yeah it maybe merits a revisit at some point, there were some songs I liked, but even as I was getting hard into The Jester Race and Whoracle 10 years ago, I didn't have a breakthrough with Colony or Clayman outside of certain songs (Embody The Invisible, Behind Space rerecording, Bullet Ride, Only For The Weak). However, I've ended up actually rather liking Reroute To Remain in the past few years so it's possible that I'd react more favourably to Colony and Clayman these days

It might, indeed. I was following a similar path with RetoRe back when it came out, having a hard time at first digesting the change, finally ending up liking it quite a lot.
Clayman I have always hailed quite a lot, though it also grew on me over time.
Whoracle never ended up to appear frequently on my earphones, yet. Well, lets wait and see...

A solid album. It's no Jester Race as an overall package but there are some great song on this record. "Ordinary Story" (seriously, this song is such a banger), "Scorn", "Colony", "Coerced Coexistence" are all fantastic. The rest ranges from good to great.
