Melodic Death Metal band In Flames returned in 2000 with a splendid rage materialized in the album Clayman. After the wonderful Colony, the Swedish band are back with a powerful release full of hits! Same line-up, but a slightly different recording sound, even more based on the tremendous guitar work of both Jesper Stromblad and Bjorn Gelotte. Anders Friden is at his best level on this album from the first note to the last and the duo Peter Iwers / Daniel Svensson provide a strong rhythm background.

Listened to this one yesterday after so long alongside Dark Tranquillity's Haven. Good times. One of the best of the genre.

This is a very good album - a lot of variety and yet consistently strong all the way through. Too many highlights to mention. A valuable addition to any respectable rock album collection.

Listen to Come Clarity. I've hated their "hit" Take This Life, and I've hated Anders's new vocals...

Reroute and Soundtrack are both very good records in their own rights. It's after that it went spiraling downhill.

Agree.... I actually preffer both Reroute and Soundtrack over Clayman. About their latest releases, I definitely do not like Come Clarity and A sense Of Purpose but there are some good tunes in the latest one.

My favourite Gothenburg album. The ultimate combination of melody and aggression. In Flames' most in-your-face album.

The first IF album that I heard, and ofc I used to prefer it more back then cuz I had no idea how to the early IF was like. Not a bad album tbh, the strong songs are really strong here ("Pinball Map", "Only For The Weak", "Clayman"), but many of these other songs are worth nothing. I'm not biggest fan of the musical approach the band took on this album, but at least it's executed properly. The vocals are alright, though I highly preferred the old(er) vocals.

Actually, turned out to be my fav IF album. Used to prefer The Jester race days of this band.
And really dislike what they do nowadays.
But Clayman is so consistent, it has so many very good songs (highlights: Only for the weak and Square nothing).
Well, the highlights may be a bit brighter on TJR, but Clayman is just a very enjoyable, powerful, seemingly never-ending Gothenburg ride.

The production value on this album is totally awesome. Perfect. In terms of songs, I think I prefer RtR, but the production on that album is not so good. Although, Colony will always be their by far best for me. Here they dropped some of the aggression and good song-writing they had on that one.

If the second half of this album was as strong as it's first half this would be In Flames best album.

Interesting point, never occured to me yet. The first half of this album is stronger than the second, I agree, but not by much imo.
Songs like Brush the Dust Away, Swim, and especially Another Day in Quicksand are really excellent, I think, the latter belonging to the album highlights imo.
I like the album about as much as The Jester Race nowadays, both being my favourite IF albums (by quite a bit).

I like Swim, but I'm not a fan of those other two tracks. Suburban Me is the other track from the second half I find to be underrated, but there is just so many killer songs in the first half.

Very strong openers on this album. "Pinball Map", "Only for the Weak", "Clayman" are fantastic song, and "Sattelites and Astronaut" might be my favorite IF song ever. Just like Colony, the rest of the track ranges from good to great.
