"The ever downward spiral, the inevitable tide
The outlines of a beast, slowly taking form
Pixel by pixel, giving birth to deadly shape"

Replace 'pixel' by 'note', and that is quite an accurate description of what you're about to face with this Blackjazz…

Oh My Fucking God

Yeah that'll probably be your reaction when you'll hear it. And for a good reason: this is one of the most mind-blowing albums released in 2010. A unique, weird, and really violent monster of a record. So be prepared for quite a ride, and not an easy one at that!

Rating: 10 Going through my first listen, and this is seriously mindblowing!
Baz Anderson - 29.12.2010 at 01:26
Crazy album. A bit alienating and over-indulgent, but impressive all the same.
Valentin B - 29.12.2010 at 04:45
I confused this band for the other Shining(who apparently are from Sweden)
dismaleuphony - 29.12.2010 at 07:40
This album kind of pisses me off and is a thoroughly great listen at the same time. I think they succeeded!

Probably has to do with them not being a visible band.
Daydream Nation - 12.01.2011 at 21:42
Bleuargh. This isn't fair. They are being CHEATED by not being on that list. They certainly made MY favourite album of the year.
Ag Fox - 18.01.2011 at 16:43
Rating: 9 Pretty cool album. Does anyone know how does this compare to their 2007 output?

It's because the band was made visible or else it would already have been there before
Daydream Nation - 08.02.2011 at 16:10
Thanks for making this exceptional band visible.

This band's pretty annoying IMO... Even though I know they're very original and all, their "music" just gets on my nerves.

then you should have seen them live together with Enslaved playing The Armageddon Concerto which the two bands specifically wrote for Roadburn last year. Thaat one totally got on my nerves and made Blackjazz seem as super chilled easy listening

Sure. This album, whatever its position in the 2010 top 20, will be one of my fav releases from last year

Someone must write a review for this creepy record!
shadowdragonfly1 - 10.02.2011 at 21:54
Rating: 7 I heard this record after i got Ihsahn's After. I like avangarde metal, but i found most of the songs unlistenable and just a show of sound distortion.
On the upside, they are really original and put a lot of crazy ideas here; but nothing that makes me want to listen to it again.
I rated a 7 just because HEALTER SKELTER was amazing and the cover from king crimson was great too.
Daydream Nation - 11.02.2011 at 23:17
It's not a THING like Ihsahn's After. Even the saxophone bits are very different in Ihsahn and Shining. Ihsahn's album was primarily song based, and apart from tunes like The Madness and the Damage Done, Fisheye and Blackjazz Deathtrance, there isn't much that is song-based and standing alone. So I think people should be listening to it without preconceived notions.
Unlistenable and a show of sound distortion? Maybe, to some. It is a little indulgent in areas. But...you can clearly hear all these genres amalgamated for this collective product. I think there's more depth that takes a NUMBER of listens to really devour. I'm still picking up subtleties on my...49th listen.
I think people SHOULD be listening to it again...especially the guy who posted above. It's by NO MEANS song-based; it really is this cohesive framework of sound distortion with shifting atmospheres and experiments. In other words, the album really plays as a whole extremely well. If you focus on any song in particular, of course you may not enjoy it on its own. It IS a concept album, of course. Even if you don't end up enjoying it as much as I do, it is an album that will truly change the way you think about metal music (Not many bands can have Devin Townsend, Blood Stain Child, industrial, even catchy Kyuss-kinda riffs on the same record amalgamated with jazz, black metal vocals and crazy trance).
And whoever rated it a 1...FAILS.

Rating: 7 I liked it but it didn't leave much of an impoession on me. I might have to listen to it a good bit more.
MechanisT - 13.02.2011 at 13:52
Weirdass album, which totally makes it awesome by the way..."Exit Sun Pt.1" reminds me a little of Muse's "Hysteria"...
neonxaos - 15.02.2011 at 01:19
Rating: 10 The brilliance of this thing is the way it simply makes people think about what metal really is, and where it can go from here. It is a landmark release, whether people like it or not. I hope to see a lot of other bands being this gutsy in the future, and I can't wait to hear Shining performing these tracks at Wacken in 2011.

Yep.. I heard that as well. Pretty funny coincidence.

Still think this is a classic, reviewed very well by Darkside Momo.

Metal I can deal with. Jazz I can deal with. Metal Jazz? Not for me. Some parts were agonizingly difficult to get through and by the time I learner to tolerate it I started drowning it out. Oh, well.

I wouldn't take this album as a reference for liking "Metal jazz" or not. These guys are in a league of their own and have some particular ways to make you dislike them.
Just sayin' so you don't turn down a release with a similar label before listening to it just for that in the future

Music-wise that's impressive indeed. And next both bands took some parts of it and used them for their next albums (most notably Shining with Fisheye and parts of Blackjazz Deathtrance)

Rating: 8 Just listened to the first song on this album, and all I can say is this: What the holy fuck am I listening to? You guys call this shit music?

Whatever it is, I'm totally addicted and I need to hear the rest of the album. If the first track is any indication, this will probably get a high rating from me.

Holy hell that cover of 21st Schizoid Man is awesome
M C Vice - 01.05.2013 at 11:51
Rating: 7 Black industrial jazz sludge?
Jaeryd17‍ - 10.07.2013 at 17:06
Rating: 8 I expected this to be a lot better judging from the opening track. The rest of it is worth a 7, but The Madness and the Damage Done, Blackjazz Deathtrance, Omen, and the 21st Century Schizoid Man cover push it up to an 8.
