Staff review by

"The Winter Wake" is the new album of the specialist of Folk Power Metal from Italy, Elvenking. Even if the band only started its career in 1999 "The Winter Wake" is already the 3rd release of the combo and I'm sure that the fans of their first albums will find something catchy here but even if some songs are pure hits, some others are a bit more average. At the end if "The Winter Wake" is a good album, it's also possible to find better Folk Metal releases.

Rating: 7 Whilst this album still displays the best bits of Elvenking's sound, I found it slightly underwhelming compared to the band's earlier material, due mostly to the weaker vocal delivery (except for the surprisingly great "Penny Dreadful" Skyclad cover) and a little too much self-indulgent melody. That said, the instrumental performance itself remains consistent and solid, making songs like "Swallowtail" and "March of Fools" instant highlights of the album.
