The Bleeding is the fourth Cannibal Corpse album and the last with founding vocalist Chris Barnes. Released in 1994, it is a very different album for the band and to this day they have not written or released anything like it. It is dissimilar from the first three records featuring Barnes due to its more guitar-oriented sound and catchiness, as well as occasionally combining groove elements with the patented sound of the band. This was also the album that Barnes decided that he wanted to be understood, abandoning the inhumanly deep vocal style used on Tomb Of The Mutilated. I vastly prefer Barnes' vocals on The Bleeding to anything he has done before or since. Some people felt that by become more understandable, Barnes and the band were "softening" their sound, which I think is simply ridiculous.

After listening to this again I realized that I don't like it as much as I thought I did.

Sure it's a good album, the songwriting is some of the best I've heard from this band, but Chris' vocals sound fucking wierd.

Chris' vocals sound fucking wierd.

That's actually my favorite part His crusty, raspy vocals just sound so decrepit and original, being the biggest reason why this is probably my favorite Cannibal Corpse album. Also, the lyrics are definitely gory, but oddly poetic in some way - take Stripped, Raped, and Strangled for example. They just flow so smoothly that it makes me a little concerned at how thought-out Chris Barnes is with those themes haha

I've always thought - in extreme metal, vocals and lyrics do not make an album worse, but they can make it better

I dunno, I just think his vocals became worse the older he got. Butchered At Birth & TOTM were his best for sure.

And the only time vocals made albums worse for me was with Chuck's vocals in Death's later releases.

yeah, imo Barnes' vocals at least on "Fucked With A Knife" are absolutely raspy and especially his high-pitched shrieks are FUCKING EVIL. same thing applies for "Stripped Raped and Strangled" of course.

This is probably the best Cannibal Corpse album. Yeah, better than Tomb of the Mutilated and Butchered at Birth. Great vocal work on Barnes' part and quite raw.

My favourite cannibal corpse album by far. The first three albums were great, but this one seemed to have better songs on the whole.

This is a very good album, although "Eaten Back To Life" will always be my fave album with Chris Barnes at the helm! Like almost every other CC album, "The Bleeding" suffers through it's inconsistency, and lack of cohesion. However, the high points on the album are not just highlights of CC's discography, but of death metal in general. And the album reels off several death metal classics before the fillers sadly start showing their faces. It's perhaps slightly overrated, but it's still a mostly great album, which also happens to feature my all-time favourite vocal performance from Chris Barnes.

This one has some decent solos on it and is significantly different compared to their other releases. There is a certain amount of restrain for the sake of writing more memorable songs.

Best of the Barnes era, although I like the others as well. People often knock his vocals on this one, not sure why, I think it's his best performance on just about any album he's ever been a part of. This one proved, they could not only play some brutal death metal, but also write good songs as well, their set lists highlights always include songs off this album.

Cannibal Corpse were never better before & after that release. A absolute killer Death Metal album. Even the first 3 Six Feet Under releases (that are really good/ after that album this band becomes more & more boring to me) can not hold this quality. The Bleeding is a must-have for Death Metal fans...

I love this album. Chris is actually understandable and the musicianship is fantastic. This is Cannibal's best record for sure. I still love their stuff with Corpsegrinder, but this album is just legendary. Chris' vocals definitely took a steep nose dive after this record.

I wish more modern death metal bands would use more of a varying vocal technique like Barnes displays here. Highs, lows, actually decipherable lyrics. For whatever reason everyone now just grunts and calls it a day.

The variance between Obituary, Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide etc... Something has gone off track in the last 20 years

One of their best albums. I can't listen to this thing without having a smirk on my face, since the first time I ever encountered this was back in the early 2000's when someone had edited a video where a local hardcore christian pastor originally had one fiery speech, but the thing was synchronized with Fucked With A Knife instead, fit perfectly with his menacing persona and mannerism. It's still one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen, but sadly it was taken down.

This is probably the best album by Cannibal Corpse, imo anyway. They also had a new sound, it was the first time for me where they weren't just being brutal for the sake of being brutal, but instead this had plenty of groove and hooks, the vocals had also become clearer, and the sound was also less brutal and harsh, which some would say was a step backwards, or in the wrong direction, tiwards mainstream territory even, but for me it was a wee bit more tolerable on my ears.

This also contains some of their best tracks, still with their trademark sick lyrics, "Stripped, Raped And Strangled", "Pulverised", "The Bleeding" and "Fucked With A Knife" being my standout tracks.
