This album crushes, grooves, and dooms. Nothing not to like. I will say that a few songs could just as easily appear on a Hail Of Bullets album. That's cool and all, but the crossover is uncanny. I do realize that the guitarist is in both bands and obviously he has a large hand in the riff-making. Certainly, he writes some of my favorite riffs between both bands. I think if you love Hail Of Bullets you have to love this album and vice versa, therefore I couldn't be happier. Also, Van Drunen just does a magnificent job on this album, fortifying his status as the best Death Metal vocalist of all-time.

Does not apply to Morbid Angel, Pestilence and Vader even though Vader's last is better than MA's it is nowhere near the qulaity of their older works

I completely agree about Morbid Angel, partially agree about Pestilence, and disagree about Vader, because they never went below a certain level of quality, even if their latest isn't as great as De Profundis or Black to the Blind.
Maybe I should rephrase my statement to "old bands (usually) do it better"

That doesn't really take the goodness. I can just listen to one half first and then the other one later. The quality is still there.
Those guys should have made it 40-45 minutes and the rest of the album could have been saved for another album or an EP. But yeah, it doesn't really bother me.

Nothing wrong with modern death metal (one of the most consistent scenes out there today) but it's nice to see groups sticking to old-school routes and doing it right.

They do the old school shit well and catchy and doom elements are good, but besides it being a very good release, I think it's slightly overrated as well.
I prefer Aborted's latest release above this one despite me being more of an old-school guy in death metal taste.

Decades ago, a time now long gone
death metal had its pure form
so easy then amongst global friends
a bold scene never to conform
changes set in, pollution begins
despicable developments
the duty to return and make all traitors burn
on to your knees and repent
deathhammer
vocals so poor, like frogs in a moor
guitars like clouds of fruit flies
where's the bass sound, drums hat don't pound
hear how our iron church cries
they don't give a fuck, just collecting bucks
acting like statues on stage
our final call to all those false
we summon thou bastards to rage
deathhammer
writing the pages, lasting for ages
restore purity that once was
deathhammer bloodstained, death will die again
this is our doctrine and cause
chapters demanding, episodes ending
deliverin the death metal bill
the years of the leech, finished as we preach
if ou won't face death wel will
deathhammer

Mitochondrion is great, Ulcerate okay, nothing more. Btw those lyrics don't refer to that sort of death metal but to polished brutal death and current Morbid Angel
Btw setlist of last Friday:
Setlist Asphyx
- The quest for absurdity
- Into the timewastes
- Scorbutics
- MS Bismarck
- Deathhammer
- We doom you to death
- Food for the ignorant
- Eisenbahnmorser
- Vermin
- Reign of the brute
- Forgotten war
- Der Landser
- Black hole storm
- The flood
- Wasteland of terror
- Last one on earth
- As the magma mammoth rises
- The Rack

Yeah, yuck !
Old Morbid Angel and the whole OSDM is something I ignored for too long if Deathhammer is a testament of what this genre is I guess I have a lot of stuff to go into

Haven't listened to straight up death metal in awhile, I have to say this is excellent. Deathhammer is one of those tracks I just keep on repeat. It's not excellent, as in a 9 rating, but excellent for a change of pace. Some of the tracks fall off, for me, or I would give it more than a 7. Kneel, you dogs.

I am with you.
The drum was set too much in the foreground, almost the same level as vocals. You hardly could listen to them at the same time....drum ? vocals ? or....guitars ? (I think you can really give up listening guitars, unless you grow two more ears).
A very distractive album. I really had placed a High Hope before it was released.
I am wondering what srt of inferior rip you guys are listening to because that certainly isn't the case with the original cd and the vinyl.

The production is superb, the doom sections are actually effective unlike some of the 90s Asphyx albums where they were not so powerful.

Great example of old school death metal. I think I like it even more than "Death... The Brutal Way". It's nice how they smartly alternate the fast death metal numbers with slower doom/death songs.
My personal favourites are the title track, "Reign of the Brute" and "Der Landser".
