Oranssi Pazuzu's debut work - Muukalainen Puhuu - appeared like a vibrating constellation of paranormal activities in the northern sky. All of a sudden a cosmic assault of psychedelic and obscure black metal soundscapes started flickering and dispersing their otherworldly essence all over the place. It's nothing new anymore that the demons have invaded space and conquered it. That's what Oranssi Pazuzu's first attempt was; what their second album - Kosmonument - pushes for has to be the establishment and colonization of the previous effort's legacy.

Ya know how sometimes people jokingly refer to Enslaved as "the Pink Floyd of black metal?" Well if Enslaved are the godfathers of this modern fusion of black metal with progressive underpinnings, then Oranssi Pazuzu took the whole idea and completely threw it out the window. In 2009, this little-known Finnish band appeared like a Close Encounter Of The Third Kind with their debut Muukalainen Puhuu, an album praised for its unique sound and originality. And here they are again, returning from the outer regions of the Andromeda Galaxy with 2011's follow-up, Kosmonument. But what exactly is Kosmonument, anyway? Is it psychedelic music? Is it black metal? Is it both? Or is it neither? The truth is, endeavoring an answer to any of these questions is pretty useless, because, quite simply, there aren't any. But then, that's part of the beauty that is Oranssi Pazuzu: the more you try to understand their music, the less you do, and vice versa. It's best to just surrender to the ethereal nature of this album, and let it take you over.

A bizarre, contorted journey through the multiple stomachs of an alien on the cosmic equivalent of Dimethyltryptamine. There's little more one can say about it than that.

After the EP's release I was expecting nothing until at least early 2012..! My anticipation for this release is as cosmic as their music.

Kosmonument, is really good FYI. Vocals are better, and the psychedelics are outstanding. A lot more precise and less spacey then, Muukalainen Puhuu.

I meant that in all due respect to their sound. It's still spacey, but not in the same way with the slight production change (which is inevitable). It's definitely a good and logical step... You will just have to find out yourself

I'm feeling the same. Mentioning OP and purposedly excluding "spacey" seems awfully out of sorts to me. Still pretty sure they will not dissappoint.

Edit: oh. Right then.

JOOE got a spot-on description on his staff pick, took the words from my mouth. While the debut felt more loose and spaced out, this feels like a journey through the jelly intestines of an alien monster
I still prefer the debut but this is awesome too

Yeah, don't know whether it's better than the debut; it lacks the surprise effect. But it feels like a normal continuation of their sound. And they're still nothing like any other band that I know of.

Exactly. I just wonder how far will this sound take them

This album improves the sound of the debut imo, and they take it to another level. I don't know how this band is not so famous how they deserve it.

Of course this band sounds like a lot of other bands: Nachmystium + Negura Bunget + Kvelertak + Mar de Grises + Ixion

For me both albums are pretty much equal... I actually give a few more credits to this album beause they experimented far more with their sound which resulted in a less accessible album but still with tones of fun tunes.

Definitely less accessible and more challenging but the debut had that "surprise factor" as it offered a new sound I had never heard before, this on the other hand is ,as you mentioned, more experimental but still within the same sound. no matter which album I prefer both albums and the whole concept of OP are great

The surprise factor is always useless to me on an objective level considering that if the order of the albums would have been reversed the factor would apply to Kosmonument

Yes this is what I meant, had Kosmonument been the debut it would have been my favorite . it is not that I prefer the debut musically or anything it is just that I had more time to listen to it and thus has grown much on me

Well, Kosmonument cannot hold a candle to the excellent psychedelic Muukalainen Puhuu. This one seems a little recycled and, because of that, too long.

Can't believe this is their lowest-rated album on here. It's easily their best. Totally chaotic, dark atmosphere that just sucks you into a black hole and doesn't let go from there. The other two are good, but imo Muukalainen Puhuu isn't as sinister, and Valonielu is more bouncey and space-rockish. This right here is the Oranssi sound I like the most.
