I always wondered what the meaning of art was. As in, what is the main goal for the artist(s)? What would be the greatest achievement? If you ask yours truly, the main goal would be to make something greater than the creator(s) and spectators, a grand monument with such a force that it can stand proud and imposing against anything around it. Ulcerate did just that. Again.

Ulcerate practically need no introduction on this site anymore. They are endeared with the respect and awe of almost everyone that's heard them. If you haven't yet heard them I bet you're well curious about them now, eh?

I just wished it was a little, duno, better.

Define what would be better for you? What aspect of the current production?

but he said before that he didn't know, just better.

What is 'just better'? Just better as such does not mean anything at all. If he thinks it could be better he must have an idea what aspect could be better according to him?
The word better as such is devoid of any meaning when it comes to production. It could mean 'clearewr' sound, fuller sound, vocals more to the foreground or less clear sound, thinner sound vocals to the backgroundd. Etc etc.

I think this is sounds rather thin. For lack of better word, I might also call this even sharp and artificial sounding at points. Slightly thicker production more akin to regular forms of DM would probably do better for me. Before posting this reply, I listened to some songs from their last three albums and compared to TDoA and EIF, vermis sounds a little badly produced.
I agree that "better production" does not have a single, definitive definition and would vary from album to album.
Now, excuse the lack of better description for what would be a "better production" for this album. I even could not properly explain that in Persian.

Imo changing the sound as to how you describe it would mean a worse production for me. Then it would lose its individuality and start to sound quite run of the mill dm.

Vermis is unique in DM spectrum prominently because of its songwriting and not production IMO.

How can anyone call this thin? If anything, this is one of the most dense death metal albums of the year. Production-wise I found it very similar to Abyssal's latest. Both have a sort of cavernous intensity about them, and at times bludgeon the listener with a wall of sound.

I'm not sure that this is one of the most dense DM albums of year since I have heard only a few 2013 metal records but no doubt that this is dense. I call its production thin because it feels thin for the songwriting. IMO production reduces its density.
As I said on multiple occasions, I really love vermis. Problem is that production deviates from perfection more than songwriting, performance etc.

An Antediluvian-ish or a Flourishing-esque thick production is exactly what I don't want for Ulcerate. It would totally drown their sound in excessive murkiness. The wall of dissonance they generate is more than adequate and the production on this one does nothing but accentuate and compliment it in its entirety.

If the Song lengths were a bit shorter, this would easily be a high 9 for me. The murky atmosphere they create is amazing regardless.

Don't hear much song writing here or at least good song writing.

It's very repetitive in a bad way.

You can do DM with good song writing but IMO this isn't an example of it.

Then we just should disagree. Ulcerate is my favorite death metal band and this albums is very great.

In comparison to The Destroyer Of All? Because that was one of the things that kept the album from being best of 2011 for me. The songs are shorter, there're just more of them.

I also like the colossal atmosphere and song-writing, and love the production that's so thick you could beat someone to death with it.

Yeap thats it pretty much and the same reason why Vermis just falls short in that regard.

I find to able to digest the dissonant song structures better listening to the songs not all at once. Like 2-3 songs in one listen you can pick up on the songs better.

As much as it sounds pretentious, I wished vermis and TDoA were twice is length. Most of the time, I go for an 6 hour+ ulcerate experience in a row and thus, wouldn't have problem listening to a 100 minutes album by them.

The best thing I ever did this year was saving this album to when I had not much of new stuff stuff to go through and I had the time to really savor it.

This record sounds so strange to me, it's totally a kind of new thing for my ears, it was a bit hard for me to digest this kind of sound, but generally speaking it's a good attempt. Weight of Emptiness is the highlight in my opinion.

Ok, I will ask you because it's clearly one of your favorite albums...

I saw this band listed under "best post metal bands". Is their any post metal in this? I listened to the first track off this album a while ago - I didn't like it. But that was a while ago, so maybe I should give this another shot? I am the consumer, you are the vendor...sell it to me...

I do think they've some post-like tendencies, but it's much less profound on this record than the previous one, The Destroyers Of All. That's the one you really should get to if you want to hear some post-metal prominence within a death metal album. Do check out the track The Weight of Emptiness from this one though and see if it does anything to change your opinion. It has that initial post-esque feel without actually containing it.

So I have spent a lot of time recently listening to their albums, particularly this one and the previous back to back. I have come to the conclusion that this, for me, is their best album. It continues with the innovative sound they came into on the last album, but adds a lot of much needed dynamics that make things a bit more varied and engaging. One of the best death albums I have heard in a long time.
