08.10.2014 If you're a serious follower of this style, you know the usual. The project of Jacob Buczarski, Mare Cognitum is raw and hard hitting black metal, but also interspersed with all those beautiful, melodic, and dreamy undercurrents that we all know and love and that've come to make this style so goddamn good when it's executed right. Highly recommended for fans of Chaos Moon, Spectral Lore, Sombres Forêts, etc. And shoutout to my buddy Fearmeister for turning me onto all the great stuff on I, Voidhanger's current roster, definitely a label worth investigating.

Wow, "Noumenon" is probably the most beautiful song I've heard all year.

No kidding. The guitar sounds gorgeous (well, I have to call it something). I don't play any instruments so I'm curious what that sound/technique is called. Anyone?

Really enjoying this album immensely.

Oh damn, that did come to mind but somehow I thought it wasn't the correct term for it. I really am musically retarded.

Yeah, that part at around 11 minutes is majestic. I might prefer the last song though.

This has indeed been a great year for ambient and atmospheric BM, Chaos Moon, Spectral Lore, this, Darkspace, The Great Old Ones, hell, even the Taatsi debut wasn't all that bad. This is why I just when people go on with that "this has been a disappointing year" crap.

The disappointment comes from the bands like Opeth,Agalloch,Septicflesh etc. But certainly each year has its horde of great albums, it's only logical with THIS MANY bands out there.

Fair enough, all pretty mediocre albums

Agreed. Opeth and Agalloch are both decent. And just decent isn't enough for bands such as those.

But yeah, lots of great releases this year. Initially I also said that this year sucks, but definitely not anymore. Especially for BM it's a great year.
Mary N. - 11.10.2014 at 19:12
Rating: 8 It's damn impressive album with very powerful composing ! I have no idea why it's reminding me of Agalloch's vocals and atmosphere at some moments. The highlight track is Noumenon in my opinion. Thanks to Erik for suggesting it to me.

Rating: 8 Bandcamp copies remaining -1. Noumenon is one of the better songs i've heard this year. The cover and the music really give off the same cosmic vibe. I love a cover that complements the music
BloodTears - 14.10.2014 at 11:54
Rating: 8 Great, beautiful black metal. This type of sound can be boring when it's not done right but that is not the case with Phobos Monolith.

Highly enjoyable.

Is this anything like this year's Chaos Moon release?

I would say that its similar but I think that its closer to the new Spectral Lore.
