As the name tells, this album has a really dark atmosphere. Helloween takes you to the latest hour with this one, and the sound is heavy and mean. Andi Deris puts his voice a little lower, and you get a kind of creepy feeling when you listen to it. But the humor is there and tracks like 'Mr. Torture' is kind of funny to listen to. Specially the intro on this album is a masterpiece, once you have heard it, you know what it's all about, that's for sure.

They did it! They have made an album that can reach a cult status of The Keepers! Of course that will never happen, because the only ones who like this album were the ones who left Helloween and made Masterplan, so it's a shame, because I would really like to see "The Dark Ride 2 - The Dark Fucking Legacy." Instead of returning to classic names to try to succeed again, they should make a new classic without Kai or Kiske on its name, really.

Rating: 8 Mr. Torture's lyrics are so funny! This is a very good album with Andi Deris! I don't know why people hate him, he's an amazing vocalist IMO!

One of the weaker Helloween albums. I was hoping for more after seeing the hype on this website.

I have to disagree with you about all the songs being great: this album is honestly pretty weak to me. "Mr Torture" and "All Over The Nations" are great tracks, but the rest of the songs vary between boring and decent (but not great) to me. Although, if you like "The Departed (Sun Is Going Down)", you might be interested to hear Beautiful Sin's song "Lost": that's pretty much what Uli (who played drums for them) wanted the song to sound like when it was written.

That said, I agree about Deris' vocals being incredible on this album: I actually think The Dark Ride contains some of his best vocal performances on any Helloween album.

Edit: Just realised I forgot to mention "Salvation": that one's also a good track.

And I respect your opinion. Honestly, I do appreciate what they were trying to do, and I do give them credit for trying it, but I just don't think it turned out that great. That said, I really doubt they would have made their last three albums without this one (and my favourite album by them is 7 Sinners: I never enjoyed the Keepers duo as much as I probably should have), so it's definitely an important album in their discography.

Well, I'd recommend you look at Gambling With The Devil, 7 Sinners and Straight Out Of Hell, as that's when they took more cues from The Dark Ride.

Rating: 9 This was the ressurection of Helloween. Their best output since the Keeper of the Seven Keys albums. An album that deserves a place in your shelf. Later albums follow the same pattern.

I thought Time Of The Oath was pretty good and probably a little better than this one. Master of the Rings had it's moments too.

One of the reviews mentions this one being dark - are we really listening to the same album? This albums a real mix with humour and uplifting songs mixed in with som dark moments.

Again Time Of The Oath had far more "darker" moments.

And Helloween "dark" is positively glaring sunlight compared to most stuff out there.

wasn't that dark
(summary)

It's just because the word "dark" is on the title....

As much as I love this album. I have to say. That bonus track "The Madness of The Crowds" can be the best song on it. It's like their speed era.
