First track leaked on Youtube. Not too shabby.

The title track is good. Plenty of heavy riffs. Vocals and lyrics deep and full of feeling, as usual, though I feel a bit of harsh vocals/growls could've been added.

It's the same formula that My Dying Bride have carried throughout the years, great for some, and boring for others.

The first track is pretty awesome. If the whole album is like that, we got ourselves a winner with this album.

I don't know, I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed by that first song - as I have been by the last few MDB albums...

The overall sound just feels too...empty and dry; too much gratuitous riffage and not enough atmosphere - the guitars, vocals and violin feel like separate entities. There is just something missing to thread the pieces together. Then again, maybe I'm just not responding to their intentions to stay "raw", maybe My Dying Bride has simple become too "old-school" for me...

Skepticism and Tyranny are both releasing new albums on the same day - I have a feeling at least one of them will eclipse this album, as this is to the year of funeral doom after all.

Heard it once, just about to listen it second time.... It's different, feels experimental at times. Honestly, I didn't enjoy it that much, but maybe it's a grower, will see....

I honestly wasn't hoping for something good. I still remember the utter crappiness of For Lies I Sire and the boredom of Evinta and A Map of All Our Failures (I should relisten to the latter though). But yeah, this sounds like their best in a long time. Great songwriting, great vocals; it's diverse and atmospheric, and most of all never tacky. Yay!

The first 3 songs are awesome. with around 28 minutes of playing time, they have just about every My Dying Bride ingredient we all love, perfectly crafted together. Same goes with the last song too.

Overall, the riffs and vocals are top notch, I'm loving the way Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride have brought back the death vocals so effectively. The lyrics, the ones I understand so far, have a more religious tinge to them than previous albums

PS, the song I liked the least at first listen was "A Thorn of Wisdom", but now it's the song I've listened to the most. Something oddly attractive about that one

How came non of staffers made review for this?
I think its good album, could b little heavier, more old death/doom, now its more gothic/doom ,and I like Arons clean singing here. Never judge album from few songs, personally I like it, I didn't expect it will so good.

Finally something to make up for "A Map Of All Our Failures" which was a very very weak album with only a few interesting songs. The Manuscript EP was great and this up there as well. Aaron's experimenting with melodic vocals is great and riffs make me want to grow my hair back. The return of growls is something which I believe shapes a band like MDB.

Got this today and gave it 2 listens, beauty of an album. Have heard each of MDB's albums at least a few times and I think this is one of their best

Apparently there was a mix up with the mixes and a bunch of CDs with an incomplete master got sent out instead of the final master. Apparently the FINAL MASTER has church bells ringing on track 6 in the very beginning. The incomplete master is "quieter and not as full or rich" as the band put it.

ERG!!!!!!!! I'm stuck with an incomplete mix of this great album

My only problem with MDB is that Ive listened to it in the 90s and got enough then. But this album is as good as their albums in 90s, better than most of the doom 2015. Only a complete novice gives this album a 5.

Thanks for the complement my friend. I am glad to see rusty fans are still around to give 8s and 9s. Just so you know, I first bought The Angel and The Dark River when I was 16 back in 2004. So yeah, I have been following them for 12 years. However, I didn't know that this will make me a novice which I believe is a heartwarming complement to my age.

It is a compliment as you listen to good music. But the album is a typical MDB-album, which you should know.

Just realised that I never commented on this one.
Good reason for a re-spin.
It is not as mind-blowing as I had in mind. Spun this heavily at the time of its release and thus overrated it I guess.
But compared to their latest album this is still pretty much inspired and worth digging I think.
Highlights: the title track (too damn cathy) and Shiver in empty halls (my favourite here).

A Nice Guy
The vocal performance on this is outstanding imo, once again a slight change in style, the riffs are alot more melodic, the songs structures aren't as long and drawn out as they once were, and the tempo has certainly increased overall, it's like they went for a more traditional doom approach, which obviously wasn't going to please the vast majority of MDB fans, but this album kind of worked well for me. it's not a typical sounding MDB album by any means but I quite like it.

"To Shiver in Empty Halls", "Feel the Misery" and "And My Father Left Forever" are the standout tracks for me the first half of the album is certainly more interesting than the second half imo, the last couple of tracks begin to get a wee tiresome imo.
