After an excellent start with their first full-length ''Once Sent From The Golden Hall'', the Swede's of Amon Amarth present us with ''The Avenger'' in the year of 1999. They were absolutely successful in maintaining the proven quality of their first work in a way that makes it hard to choose which of the albums is superior. It seems that ''Once Sent...'' stands out musically, while ''The Avenger'' better uses the Viking theme within the songs. Nevertheless, this album presents a musical quality above the average.

If it wasn't for their excellent releases on 2007-8, this would be my favorite album from them.

I didn't think Amon Amarth's earlier albums were that significant a few years ago, but listening to 'The Avenger' has now made me think otherwise. It generally has the same formula as the other albums, but it still hits hard as far as musically possible.

I can't believe Twilight Of The Thunder God is rated higher than their first few albums on this site. This is true Amon Amarth. Melodic Death Metal at its finest.

While I am certainly not a big sucker for Amon Amarth's music, I still think that their first two albums do have their moments of utter greatness. Still a fun ride after all these years. It's a shame what this band has become.

Agreed, but their path became extremely obvious when the songwriting and production fell flat. From innocently appreciating them long ago seriously for having intense catchiness on top of admirable songwriting to many on here who will stubbornly never acknowledge their past. Actually, who knows. After Alexi Laiho's death seriously made me reconsider getting them on vinyl after deep reconsideration anythings possible.

Amon Amarth had a genuinely fun fire in their first 4 albums where it was unironically their songwriting that's become an unsung concern that I always found overlooked. Bloomed by the recording's dynamic and tone of sound blended for a sheer equal balance of mountainous weighted riffs hooking into swirling melody waves meant back when they had intensity. Sometimes emotion quality which is a rare feat in dm afaik. I never got the Unleashed appeal and viewed them as bland as you can get to where you can see clearly how Amon Amarth capitalised smartly by putting 2+2 (Brutal Viking and Gothenburg dm) together for their quest to be the next arena metal band.

Say what you want but Thor Arise is a fucking crusher that leaves you swiveling on repeat.

Their second best album after Once sent... 9.0. Simply a classic of the band.

This was ok but I much prefer the debut, I would say for me it's the worst of their ealy material, unfortunately the only track that's ever stood out for me on this is "Metalwrath".

The debut is much stronger than this IMO. First three tracks + "God, his Son and Holy Whore" are pretty great tho.
