All I will say about this album, is it's incredibly underrated. If it wasn't for "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" and especially "Heavy Duty/Defenders Of The Faith", it would be the perfect metal album, and Priest's best. As every other song is a total gem!

As much as I like Painkiller, I have to say I agree with you. It is a great album, but maybe a little overrated. Certainly albums like Stained Class and Sad Wings Of Destiny were the apex for Priest, at least in a purely creative sense.

This is probably my favourite all-round Judas Priest album.

Freewheel Burning is a killer opener for sure, but I think SFV is a better overall album. The Sentinel and Eat me Alive and Love Bites are simply kickass, though.

Wonder why people like Jawbreaker so much. It's the worse song on the album next to Rock Hard, Ride Free.

Because it beats the crap out (just for the opening riff and opening chorus alone) of Love Bites, eat Me Alie, Riock Hard, Ride Free, Some Heads Are Gonna Roll, Night COmes Down, Hevay Duty, Defenders Of The Faith. Hell it is superior to anything on the immensely overrated Painkiller.

If anything, Jawbreaker is underrated. It's one of Priest's very best songs imo, and should be regarded as a classic.

That's as maybe, but it's still not generally regarded as a genre classic in the same way that songs like Painkiller, Victim Of Changes, Electric Eye, Breaking The Law etc are... and it should be.

The first four songs are great, but after that there's a dreadful dead spot (Love Bites and Eat Me Alive) and the album never recovers, even though Some Heads Are Gonna Roll is decent and Night Comes Down is really good.

Sometimes I ponder what an album with the best tracks from this one and, say, Screaming for Vengeance would be like. I reckon it would be one of the greatest albums of all-time. Maybe you could say that about other bands and their catalogue but for me, the contrast between killer and filler on some of the Judas Priest albums is particularly stark.

I've thought about that as well, picking the best songs from Screaming and Defenders and making one great album instead of two average ones. They're so similar that it could be done.
And I agree with the second point. The Priest albums of the 80's all have problems with filler tracks and "the contrast between killer and filler" can be mind-boggling.

Funny you mention this... I already did that and I call the album Defenders of Vengeance... even combines the album art as well

Nice work - and I like the title. Beats Screaming for Faith. Out of curiosity, what's the track listing?

If I were to make an album consisting of my fave songs from both those albums, this would be my tracklisting:
1. The Hellion/Electric Eye
2. Riding On The Wind
3. Love Bites
4. You Got Another Thing Comin'
5. Jawbreaker
6. Devil's Child
7. Freewheel Burning
8. The Sentinel
9. Bloodstone
10. Screaming For Vengeance
11. Rock Hard, Ride Free
12. Eat Me Alive
Both albums are equally represented here.

It's a fun game to play. Nice track listings, guys. I like the idea of equal representation between the two albums. For what it's worth, my combined super-album would be:
1. The Hellion/Electric Eye
2. Freewheel Burning
3. Riding on the Wind
4. Jawbreaker
5. Bloodstone
6. Rock Hard Ride Free
7. Screaming for Vengeance
8. The Sentinel
9. You've Got Another Thing Comin'
10. Some Heads Are Gonna Roll
They are also in alternate order between the two albums.

Overrated Priest album in my opinion. Its great, no doubt, but less exciting than most of their classics. "Jawbreaker" on the other hand is in my Top 5 Judas Priest songs.
