It's been quite the journey for Wolves In The Throne Room over the past six years. After releasing the epic, brilliantly composed Celestial Lineage in 2011, they chose to follow it up not with more of their epic, transcendent black metal, but with a full fledged ambient album, the polarizing Celestite from 2014. Three years later, the band are going back to their roots, conjuring forth the black metal magic yet again.

I thought Celestite was allright a decent 7 for me. Cetainly did not hate it... It just loses momentum pretty quickly and after a few spins I get very little out of it.
There are bands out there doing it better and I'm not talking about bands that exclusively work with ambient. Paysage d'Hiver comes to mind as a black metal project that does good ambient on the side. My problem with Celestite is that it literally sounds like a WITTR album minus the guitars and drums... And that's bad because it means that it can't hold the weight on its' own, because it feels like something is missing and they couldn't fill that void with extra synths.

For me it'd be a 6. Not that terrible, but there are bands that do it better.

I am generally a fan of the genre and I hated Celestite.

That's not a fan, that's a takfiri

I love the atmospheric black metal genre, and loved seeing Wolves in the Throne Room live recently, but this album was just mediocre for me. Not good, not bad, not something I'd see myself wanting to listen to that often. They definitely created a potent, almost meditative soundscape but maybe went a little too deep down that rabbit hole to the point where the atmosphere took away from the musical aspect.

I came back to this several days ago to see if it would make a better impression now then when I was first listening and.... nope. Still probably the weakest WITTR album yet. I don't mind them going back to black metal after Celestite, but this definitely sounds more like C grade contemporary atmo BM than it does WITTR. Hope their next one recaptures that spark that made albums like Two Hunters and Celestial Lineage so amazing.

Very good album indeed. After Celestite I was hesitant that this album would be boring, even when I knew they were returning to play black metal. But good thing that was not the case. Can't wait for the new album.

I came into this album with a fresh mind as it is the first Wolves In The Throne Room album for me, and I REALLY liked it. No disrespect to anyone, but sometimes I feel like some people on here are too burned out of a genre to give an album a fair chance. No way I could ever see this album as being mediocre or subpar. But it could also be my inexperience and excitement for the genre as I'm quite new to it, who knows...
IMO very well crafted, interesting and it had me mesmerized in my chair from beginning to end. The first two tracks are a 10/10 for me, the rest an 8.
I'd give this album a solid 8.5/10
