Over the course of a decade, Katatonia have grown from their blackened doom origins to one of the best bands in music today. With each of their previous four offerings, they have explored themes of emotional isolation and melancholy through various musical expressions, and in so doing have become innovators and an inspiration for others. With Last Fair Deal Gone Down, the band's fifth release, Katatonia have achieved their most complete and convincing work to date, creating an album that almost makes their past efforts seem merely pedestrian by comparison.

One of the greatest albums in the modern history of Katatonia, topped only by Viva Emptiness, in my opinion. One can clearly hear big improvements in both band's songwriting ability and vocal performance of Jonas Renkse compared with Discouraged Ones and Tonight's Decision.
Besides, this album contains one of my favourite Katatonia songs ever - Sweet Nurse.

"Tonight's Music", definitely.
Or maybe "Chrome".
Or perhaps "Dispossession"?

Oh fuck, except for "Passing Bird" (one of my least fav of Katatonia) they're all wonderful.

This album is simply great, I have a funny story with the song "We Must Bury You", in which I made a vocal cover on Youtube that absolutely sucked. The song is awesome, but the cover was extremely forced. This album will always leave a special impact on me. Katatonia for life! \m/ Btw, my favorite song on the album is either Dispossession, Clean Today, or The Future of Speech (Don't make me choose!!).

UPDATE: After hearing the live version of this album on Last Fair Day Gone Night, I much prefer listening to that over the regular studio album. The studio version seems more stilted and lifeless in comparison to how it's played live.

Great album, Last Fair Deal Gone Down is a prime example of mid-period Katatonia - their most challenging stage is album exceptional....

I love this shit. The guitar work is dark and atmospheric, and Renkse's vocals have such a distinct personality to them. Dark metal at its finest.

Now that’s a super band if I’ve ever seen one. i got to know them through a close friend of mine back in 2008. Love to hear the new albums and the older ones. for me doom and death metal was a very special taste of music.
