Katatonia's third album Discouraged Ones was a brave turning point for the band. It distanced the band from the black metal tag that shackled them, and allowed some more subtle influences to creep into the mix. Both 2000's Tonight's Decision and 2001's Last Fair Deal Gone Down seemed to build upon their strengths as musicians and the fine art of crafting songs, and clearly showed the bands growing skills in both atmospherics and the ability to project the depths of human despair without losing hope.

Really? This is the one I come back for singing along.

Well yeah... I hear tons of nice textures going on. I love how it's an easy listen but still delivers fantastic, strong and tight songwriting if you stop the vocals for a second and focus.

Well, is just that I don't find them as captivating as you but I agree that every song is good. If it wasn't for the lack of album feeling that I feel it would be a really good album.

Like I said before I like the songs separately but the album as a whole bores me.

Whatever we're missing, I'm too busy listening to Brave Murder Day to care.

Hah, QFT.
Although it's more Dance of December Souls in my case.

And I'm listening to both of those amazing albums.

I'll never understand why this album is regarded as one of Katatonia's greatest albums, as it's one of few albums I actually regret buying.

Remix&Remaster on the way.

totally no need for that. That will most probably destroy this album.

Totally unnecessary. It'll end up sounding like the recent boring and sterile albums I guarantee.

Pfft. I'm sure I'll love the remaster and the atmospheric DEK too. ^^

I'll be curious about how the remastered Viva Emptiness will sound, but I agree that there is no need. I think the copy I have sounds fine the way it is.

Bought the remastered edition. Listening right now.

It's wonderful, it's damn wonderful.
Now I REALLY understand why they said they weren't satisfied with the mixing.

Not as consistent as TGCD, especially with respect to the melodic phrasing and the melodies themselves. Even some of the heavier bits aren't as meticulously crafted...a shame because most of the album is brilliant

If there's one thing I wouldn't call TGCD it's "consistent." So much filler on that record. Half the album is totally forgettable. Also the beginning of the end that is their sterile sound.

Nah, forgettable would be tracks 8-10 on this album. I can easily differentiate between all the tracks on TGCD. Every track on that album is of equal quality barring "Increase" ----> consistency.

As someone who lives in the city, I feel this album's atmosphere and sound, along with most Katatonia albums post-Discouraged Ones, captures the real essence of the bleaker and darker side of urban life better than anything I've ever heard.

In most cases im skeptic with remasters, as it means means loudness and loss of quality. Katatonia does indeed sound better remastered, its not only louder, but also more enjoyable, the original seems muddied. I liked it.
