Biography

It is said that there is no substitute for experience and guitarist Jack Starr can certainly attest to that fact. His band Burning Starr debuted in 1986 and released their sophomore effort, No Turning Back!, that same year. It's an album Rockadrome.com calls a "classic," an "essential blend of Judas Priest and Riot style melodic mid '80s traditional power metal." Now, after a 20 year hiatus, Burning Starr is back with Defiance, the band's first release on Magic Circle Music. For Starr, Defiance is a testament to both his perseverance and his influence.

Starr began his professional career in 1982 with an invitation from guitar baron Mike Varney to appear on the Shrapnel Records compilation U.S. Metal Volume 2. Soon thereafter he founded the band Virgin Steele, whose eponymous debut was the inaugural release on Music For Nations, the British label now legendary for launching the careers of such industry heavyweights as Metallica and Ratt.

In 1984 Starr released his acclaimed solo CD, Out Of The Darkness, which features '80s vocal kingpin Rhett Forrester as well as musicians from Rainbow and The Rods.

In the mid-to-late '80s his band Burning Starr became a cult sensation with releases like Rock The American Way, which Hit Parader magazine called "an album that rocks with both strength and precision." The band also became a springboard for musicians who would go on to play with Danger Danger, White Lion, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dirty Looks, Quiet Riot and Widowmaker, among others.

In the '90's and throughout the early part of the new millennium Starr revisited his blues roots with the formation of Smoke Stack Lightning and the Jack Starr Blues Band. But Starr's metal odyssey didn't end there. He recently reformed Burning Starr and the band now includes vocal sensation Todd Michael Hall, bassist Ned Meloni and special guest Rhino on drums.

Striving to help strengthen his connection to the genres he helped define, Starr signed with Manowar's label, Magic Circle Music, knowing that this association would improve both the quality of his work and the breadth of his influence. Defiance is not only brimming with Starr's prototypical power metal songwriting and rock guitar heroics, but it also benefits from top notch production, courtesy of Joey DeMaio.

Songs like "Ancient Ones," "Once And Future King" and "The Day Of The Reaper" embody the power and glory befitting, dare we say, a king of metal.

Jack Starr throughout his career has consistently performed and recorded with world-class musicians, cultivated a devoted fan base with his signature style and inspired musicians who have kept his legacy relevant in recent years via the symphonic and power metal movements. Defiance is inarguably a testament to these facts.

Their last album Land Of The Dead - produced by Bart Gabriel received hundreds of positive reviews in both printed and online media around the world, including very positive reviews in respected magazines such as Metal Hammer and Rock Hard - some reviewers even said it was one of the best albums of the entire year.
