Death Angel - Music Used In Psychological Study

Death Angel were recently used in a psychological study that shows liked and disliked music are equally disruptive to serial recall. The disliked music in the study was the song "Thrashers" by Death Angel.

Dr. Nick Perham explained his reasoning by using Death Angel as the "disliked" music in the study: "We needed a track that most participants would say they did not like. Having been a fan of metal music since my teens, I was pretty confident that a thrash metal song would do the trick as most people never seemed to like the music I liked. In choosing a thrash metal song, I needed a song that was heavy but also allowed the listener to hear many of the different components of the song - the acoustical variation between the successive sound items. We chose "Thrashers". Participants were only allowed to participate in the study if they disliked thrash metal as a musical genre...

Personally, I have been a fan of Death Angel since The Ultra-Violence and saw them at the Bristol Bierkeller around 1990 supporting the Act III album."

For decades research has shown that listening to music can alleviate anxiety and depression, enhance mood, as well as increase cognitive functioning such as spatial awareness. However, until now, research has not addressed how we listen to music. For instance, is the cognitive benefit still the same if we listen to music whilst performing a task, rather than before it? Further, how does our preference for a particular type of music affect performance? A new study from Applied Cognitive Psychology shows that listening to music that one likes whilst performing a serial recall task does not help performance any more than listening to music one does not enjoy.

The researchers explored the "irrelevant sound effect" by requiring participants to perform serial recall (recall a list of 8 consonants in presentation order) in the presence of five sound environments - quiet, liked music (e.g., Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Stranglers and Arcade Fire), disliked music (the track "Thrashers" by Death Angel), changing-state (a sequence of random digits such as '4, 7, 1, 6') and steady-state ('3, 3, 3'). Recall ability was approximately the same, and poorest, for the music and changing-state conditions and the most accurate recall occurred when participants performed the task in the quieter steady-state environments.

Lead researcher Nick Perham explains: "The poorer performance of the music and changing-state sounds are due to them containing lots of acoustical variation the order of which impairs the ability to recall the order of items, via rehearsal, within the presented list. Other tasks and processes that also require the ability to retain order information in the short-term via rehearsal, such as mental arithmetic, may be similarly affected by their performance in the presence of changing-state, background environments."

They know Volbeat ? they like our records. We had the opportunity to talk to those guys during the last three years touring around Europe. And to actually have them on the record is really a great compliment. What they did in the studio to the Volbeat sound is amazing."

Debauchery - Vocalist Sacked From His Job For Being In A Death Metal Band

Debauchery vocalist Thomas "The Bloodbeast" Gurrath was sacked from his position as a philosophy trainee teacher at a high school in Stuttgart in Germany due to the "violent" content of his music. Gurrath was given the choice by the educational authorities between continuing his job teaching ethics to 14-year-old students and maintaining his career as a death metal vocalist. Gurrath, however, refused to give up Debauchery, which caused him not only to lose his job at his school, but also to be banned from teaching anywhere in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg as long as he continues to be a member of a death metal band.

The school governors were apparently not aware of his links to death metal when they hired him. However, one supervisor at the school discovered the band's website and informed the authorities. The parents and the school officials were horrified when they saw some of the band's promotional materials which feature naked women covered with blood and sado-masochistic equipment. The officials described the band's live shows as signs of "mental disability" and decided that it is not safe for children to be in the same classroom with Gurrath.

"It was very worrying to listen to his music and then realise he was teaching our children," said one parent.

Gurrath defended the content of his band's music, which includes songs with titles such as "Kill Maim Burn" and "Torture Pit", claiming that it only reflect the violence in the world around him. "I would never give up my music just because the education authorities order it," he stated firmly.

Soilwork vocalist Bjorn "Speed" Strid commented: "We are stoked to tour with the most vicious thrashers from the west, famous for their gin drinking and intense live shows. Death Angel is a classic band that we've wanted to tour with for a long time. A perfect fit for the bill and surely an awesome touring companion. The summer of mosh is upon us. Don't miss out!"

Death Angel frontman Mark Osegueda added: "I can't begin to tell you how excited we are about the upcoming tour! I first heard Soilwork on a Nuclear Blast promo compilation and they stood out from the first listen. The riffs, the drumming, and Bjorn's vocal attack! Then we were fortunate enough to play with them at With Full Force Festival a few years back and they killed it live! As fate would have it, I was asked to participate in a Nuclear Blast 20 Year Anniversary compilation album called Out of the Dark, which Peter Wichers wrote the music for. I wrote the lyrics and melody for a song on that compilation called 'My Name is Fate'! Peter actually was also the producer, so I was fortunate enough to get to work with him in the studio! What a brilliant guy and and a great musician and now that he is back in the fold Soilwork is back on top of their game. I think the musical styles and live performances of both bands will make every show on this tour a show not to be missed by any true fan of HEAVY music! So don't just hear about the aftermath, experience it for yourself!"

Death Angel - New Album Due Later This Year

Hot on the heels of a busy and productive 2009, Bay Area thrash legends Death Angel have been holed up in their Oakland, California studio for the past few months writing songs for their next Nuclear Blast release, tentatively scheduled to drop in September. The band heads into Audio Hammer Studios in Sanford, Florida in March, with production genius Jason Suecof on the board, to start tracking the new record. Suecof is on the cutting edge of the current metal world having produced albums for the likes of Trivium, August Burns Red, The Black Dahlia Murder, All That Remains, White Chapel, Devildriver and many more.

Rob Cavestany, lead guitarist of Death Angel had this to say about plans for the new album: "Jason is one of my favorite producers churning out some of the sickest slabs of metal out there today. I am so stoked to have the chance to co-produce our next record with him. It's gonna be vicious! The band is on fire right now in the thick of pre-production and the new songs are crushing! We can't wait to start tracking!"

When asked about the hiring of Suecof, Death Angel vocalist, Mark Osegueda, added: "We are so excited about the opportunity to work with Jason on the upcoming album. The new material is the most aggressive and technical music we have written in years. So, we needed a producer that was capable of unleashing the tones that match and compliment the over-all vibe of the songs. With Jason's experience in producing some of the most brutal contemporary metal artists and albums of today I know we made the right choice! I think the collaboration between the two of us will prove to be venomous and infectious! It will be Death Angel's first album ever recorded outside of our home state of California. We will be heading out to Jason's very own Audio Hammer studios for total immersion into what, I can guarantee, will be the heaviest Death Angel album to date!"

The band plans to post regular updates following their progress in the studio on their MySpace page and on their brand new website, so keep an eye out for that.
