Primordial - Simon O'Laoghaire Rejoins, Enter The Studio In November

Irish metallers Primordial have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"It's been a while since my last confession.

Joking aside it really has been a long time since our last transmission and the reasons are manifold and really pretty simple. This has been one of the most tumultuous years in the band since the mid nineties. The wheels very nearly came clean off, so where do I start.

We can't go any further without clearing up the drummer situation. Truth is, we had an incident in Greece that if you follow or know anything about the band has been well documented so we won't go into again. Simon had some real problems that night, firstly we thank the Greek fans for their understanding and we will be back in 2011. Yes it's true in the aftermath of that we auditioned some drummers and I must also thank everyone who applied from abroad, the Irish drummers we did play with and everyone who sent us emails and messages wishing us strength and asking after Simon.

Suffice is to say Simon is the drummer of Primordial and I have no doubt this will never change, he is fit and well and we rehearsed yesterday. For our own piece of mind we had to audition people and in hindsight maybe something positive came out of it in that we had to put the album recording back and I feel we will be better prepared. We all of course have a long history together of over two decades in various personal combinations and to put it mundanely you go through ups and downs and this year has had more than it's fair share of downs. For the first time in years we played a few very average shows and by our own admission became unfocused. Yet as always we regroup, our own biggest critics and in one month we enter the studio to record album number seven.

We would like to extend massive thanks to Gareth Averill for filling in at short notice for a fistful of gigs over the summer. In case you didn't know he's the guy who shot and edited our dvd and as you may recognise, my cousin. He stood up to the plate and in a couple of days learned our set, having been a session drummer in the Irish indie/rock scene for a decade. The whole experience and auditioning drummers at the very least gave us a greater insight into the dynamic that makes Primordial Primordial and that dynamic belongs to all five of us. We may have stand ins for shows now and again because we are not a professional band nor make a living from it and life gets in the way of us all doing every show but we realised that replace one of the five of us creatively and Primordial is not Primordial.

Primordial - In Search For A Drummer

Primordial are looking for a drummer. Here's the statement the band issued yesterday:

"Due to circumstances beyond our control we are now left in a position to advertise for a drummer. We need someone who is determined, committed to their craft, stepping up to the plate of touring and playing big festivals. Previous experience would of course be preferable. No half measures, no glass is half empty attitudes. Someone who will bring their style and energy to the band and of course a fucking killer drummer. Nothing less.

There is a new album in the offing, the possibility of standing on the stages of some of the biggest metal festivals in 2011 and of course some form of income from those...

It's preferable they know extreme metal of course, that's where we came from, but more importantly, the Maidens, Sabbaths, Motorheads and Thin Lizzys of this world as that's where the drumming in Primordial has for the most part been holding court... Samples available here.

We rehearse in Dublin of course so a proximity to there is preferable but we are not adverse to someone from abroad who can work hard when the time comes and is near enough to a Ryan Air terminal, or a relocation to Dublin is also a possibility..."

Contact the band if you are interested.

Primordial - DVD Details, Trailer Online

Original news, posted on 07.01.2010

A trailer for Primordial's forthcoming DVD release, All Empires Fall, has been posted online.

The All Empires Fall DVD is due out via Metal Blade Records in March, and will feature footage shot at the band's January 24th, 2009 show at the Button Factory in Dublin, Ireland, as well as documentary footage.

A limited edition set will include bonus features and a bonus audio CD. Further details to follow.

UPDATE

Official press release

Irish Pagan masters Primordial will release their first ever DVD All Empires Fall on February 28th / March 1st 2010 via Metal Blade in Europe. It will be a DVD-set containing two discs full of quality material.

Disc 1 is the centrepiece of the DVD and features a full Primordial headline show recorded live on the 24th of January, 2009 in their hometown of Dublin, Ireland. The show was filmed with five cameras and has an exceptional vintage look due to the hard work in post production. A truly impressive and powerful live gig, exciting from start to finish in front of die hard Primordial audience and a perfect sound track that is available in stereo and 5.1.

Disc 2 features live clips from the bands appearances at Ragnarok Festival (Germany), Hove Festival (Norway) and Graspop Metal Meeting (Belgium) in 2008. The second disc also features a band documentary with all the inside stories and loads of ancient footage from the early stages of the band. The documentary has a playing time of approx. 60 minutes. Interviews with all band members and rehearsal footage complete the second disc of the set!

The special Deluxe version of All Empires Fall features expanded packaging and two additional audio CDs featuring the Dublin show!

Here´s what singer A.A. Nemtheanga has to say about All Empires Fall: "...the gods have been working hard dogging the release of our first DVD All Empires Fall but finally we are ready to prevail. The DVD will contain our Dublin show from last year, a documentary and bonus material from recent festivals. The special edition will contain the audio discs of the Dublin show, so you can hear how some old classics are played now, some almost two decades after writing.

So how does it look? The simple answer is and without exaggeration possibly one of the best Metal live shows I've ever seen. We filmed it on analog reels, cut it with frightening pace and mixed it up with some very unconventional camera angles. It has the feel of a classic show from the late 70s not the clean, clinical digital vacuum most modern shows are filmed in. We also invested a lot of time, money and effort so don't expect one of those free recordings most festivals and soundstages offer. As normal we didn't do anything conventionally so there are no boring balcony stills or side of stage montages. No overdubs, auto tuning or drop ins we are proud that All Empires Fall shows us as we are and as a Primordial show always is. Blood and thunder and no quarter given from start to finish..."

Primordial - Re-Issue CD And Bonus DVD Details

Metal Blade Records press release

Metal Blade and Primordial have decided to upgrade the upcoming re-issue of "Imrama" a bit, so now there won't be a bonus CD, but a bonus DVD included. The DVD comes from the fathomless pits of singer A.A. Nemtheanga's cave and is pure gold for any Primordial lunatic since it includes a live recording from 1994 in Cork City, Ireland. The DVD also features an audio commentary by A.A. Nemtheanga talking about the early days of the band and the gig in particular.

Recorded in late 1994, "Imrama" was originally released by Cacophonous Records in the autumn of 1995, already displaying Primordial's sense for overwhelming melodies, epic drama and total commitment, wrapped in a raw sound with a much stronger black metal influence than the band shows nowadays. The re-issue comes as a CD/DVD package including the remastered album plus unreleased demos and live recordings, packaged in a precious black linen slipcase with glossy golden hot foil print, containing a six-page Digipak with the original artwork, the two discs and a 16-page booklet with new liner notes and additional photos. Mandatory for any self-respecting heathen!

"Imrama" CD cover art]:

01. Fuil Arsa
02. Infernal Summer
03. Here I am King
04. The Darkest Flame
05. The Fires...
06. Mealltach
07. Let The Sun Set On Life Forever
08. To the Ends of the Earth
09. Beneath a Bronze Sky
10. Awaiting the Dawn

+ bonus tracks from the '93 demo "Dark Romanticism"
11. To Enter Pagan
12. The Darkest Flame
13. Among The Lazarae
14. To The Ends Of The Earth

Bonus DVD "Live In Cork City Feb 1994":

01. Among The Lazarae
02. Let The Sun Set On Life Forever
03. To Enter Pagan
04. The Darkest Flame
05. The Fires

The "Imrama" re-issue will be out on the 13th/16th of March in Europe.

Primordial - Some Updates From The Band

Vocalist Alan "Nemtheanga" Averill has posted some updates on the band's website:

Forgive me father it's been months since my last confession...

I have been lazy, accept my apologies. It's about time I posted a new message on the site and let you all know whats happening on Planet Satan.

The gigs have now started coming a few every couple of weeks. The Ragnarok Festival in Lichtenfels was a triumph for us, our first show in Germany for the new album and nearly 5000 people there to give praise to the Old Gods. We also shot a dvd, it remains to be seen whether we can use it but this is something we are going to be looking at over the coming months. Tomahawk festival the following day in Osnabruck was not quite the success of the previous day and we arrived very late due to a day when everything that could go wrong did !. The show was excellent and we played possibly the best we have done since the album came out but it seems like quite a few of you thought we had cancelled and headed home after Turisas. Next time

We returned to Greece last weekend and it was indeed glorious. I am going to write a full tour report about the weekends mayhem very soon but suffice is to say we had twice as many people almost then we did when we played for Gathering. Our friends in Mael Mórdha went down a storm and both Agnes Vein in Thessaloniki and Dead Congregation in Athens were both excellent.

The less said perhaps about our show in Katowice, Poland the better. While not being "bad" although thats a relative term we returned home chastened and with hopefully a little the wiser. Playing before noon simply sucks and especially when you are before Immolation!.

We have a break now but Sweden Rock looms large. It's going to be very interesting !. I'll tell you how David Coverdale and I get on swopping vocal tips.

Our Wacken stage time was announced to admittedly some disappointment. 11 am on one of the bigger stages on Friday. We had hoped for a later slot but that's the way the dice rolls in Wacken and it's not like it was back in 98 when we first played where the first bands played to literally less then 1000 people. it should be packed, but there is something disconcerting about putting on the greasepaint at 10 am. With a bit of luck I can sit drinking with Watain stinking out the backstage from noon on !. Stinking up the day.

The picture disc of TTND is going to be out through Metal Blade next month so keep an eye out for it on their e-store and in shops. It looks amazing and will look very nice on my wall beside Twilight of the Gods thank you very much !.

Primordial - New Album Details

Official press release, token from the Primordial website:

"So we are finally finished the recording of our sixth album. After a few rain sodden weeks locked up in Foel Studios in North Wales "To The Nameless Dead" is for all but mastering and final artwork completed.

This time far away from the chaos and negative influences of a big city the recording process was far smoother and more complete then we have ever known. We left at the end quietly satisfied as opposed to feeling like our nerves were shot and far more stressed then we began. Much of this we owe to Chris Fielding who engineered it and put many long hours into its creation and to Dave Anderson who has created something we can only call a "good vibe" in the middle of nowhere far from the meddling influence of civilisation?.immense thanks.

The sound is of course instantly recognisable as Primordial but more powerful then before, heavier and richer with a much more rounded sound then before. Whereas The Gathering Wilderness was a dark often impenetrably bleak work "To The Nameless Dead" has found the fire in its veins to defy, to rebel, to stand up and oppose all. This is a vast and epic album, more pounding and full of rage then Primordial has been for many a winter?

It is defiantly at odds with a modern metal scene that often seems to place banality, mediocrity and safety above passion, honesty and truth. It does not sound like a computer recorded it, it does not sound like a procession of riffs simply poached from metals founding fathers, it is not a mindless exercise in musical masturbation. This is Metal is it was meant to be played. With Passion?

We play music because we have to?this is in our veins. This is our culture, our history, our folklore, our heritage. We make no apologies, we will not compromise. And now with our sixth album "To The Nameless Dead" we are about to make our strongest statement yet?

Acta Non Verba
Ad Asperum Finem
Vae Victis

PRIMORDIAL

EUROPEAN RELEASE DATE - NOVEMBER 24TH
USA - TBC

First edition will contain a limited live disc recorded at Rock Hard Open Air in a lavish book format."

You can listen to a live recording of 'The Coffin Ships' from the same Rock Hard Open Air concert on the band's MySpace

Primordial - To Record New Album In July/August

The following is part of a posting on Primordial's official website:

"...Primordial will enter the studio in July and August to record the new album. We are travelling across the water to Wales to the middle of nowhere to an old analog studio. There isn't a working title yet for the album and in typical Primordial style there is a lot of work to be done on the songs but with a bit of luck and the Gods blessing we will pull the Iron out of the Fire once more. And with the blessing of Metal Blade it should be out in 2007?

And to record for the first time in Summer is going to be a totally different environment, we always without exception have recorded in Winter. Stepping outside after a take into blazing sunshine instead of lashing rain and freezing cold is in all honesty something I'm looking forward to. The Irish Winter surely isn't a beautiful thing, in the city it's a bleak grey monotonous washed out few months?

The themes have moved on the from the last album and right now I'm beginning to piece together some ideas for the artwork with Paul from Scald who made The Gathering Wilderness look so special. It will look incredible I can guarantee that and will be an absolutely pure artistic statement in this day and age of hollow, plastic meaningless Metal covers. This of course goes for the music as well without saying!"

Primordial - Begin Work On New Album

Vocalist A.A. Nemtheanga from Irish metallers Primordial has issued the following update on the band's official website:

"The song-writing for the new album has been coming along, slowly as usual but gradually happening none the less. To my ears at least it sounds more up tempo then gathering. There is one song which is mainly blast-beats and some more mid-up tempo anthemic sounding tracks. The projection for going into the studio is april/may 2007 but time is most definitely not constant in primordial land so that's completely open to change. as much of a pain for Metal Blade as that will be.

I had planned on doing backing vocals on the new Rotting Christ album and also was asked and duly contributed a lyric for sakis, sadly neither happened. The vocals because of studio money/time constraints and the lyrics because sakis hadn't a track for them! Next time. However the idea has been hatched to do a Primordial/Rotting Christ split 10" or something like that. So we shall see what happens there. Anyone who knows me knows my love of rotting christ and the fact triarchy of the lost lovers is one of my top 5 metal albums ever made...yep read that again !!!!. So i hope we can sort it out. There are plans to do some backing vocals for another rather famous band of panzer commanders later this year but we shall have to wait and see.

I can also say I will be doing all vocals for a new project with members of a band who you won't believe. Total kult. Its going to warp a few perceptions and crush all I can assure you. I cant reveal the name or the band yet but I will be able to very soon.

I nearly forgot, we have a mini tour of Finland confirmed for February with INSOMNIUM and HELLBOX. We will be stuck in the middle. Same set length as Insomnium etc. The last time we played in finland was at Nummirock and we had a complete blast so hopefully this will be mighty indeed.

There are a few other shows confirmed. The Metal Boat trip with disaster in April near Koblenz and a festival in Northern Greece with The Haunted and Rotting Christ and plans are afoot for a small tour in the US in summer 2007. We'll have too see what falls into place."

Primordial - Set Release Date

"Irish dark metal masters PRIMORDIAL have finished the recordings for their upcoming longplayer! "The Gathering Wilderness" is PRIMORDIAL's fifth full length album and their first for Metal Blade Records.

States singer Nemtheanga: "With this album we wanted to challenge ourselves a little more, it's very easy to slip into doing what is the easiest or the most comfortable and the previous 4 albums had been done with Mags of Academy studios fame (My Dying Bride, Anathema, P. Lost etc...) but for Gathering we wanted to shake things up and try something different. So we got over to Ireland famed engineer Billy Anderson (Melvins, sleep, Neurosis, High on Fire, Brutal Truth among many) and changed the studio we had become used to using in Ireland. Basically in search of something different."

tracklist "THE GATHERING WILDERNESS":
1. The golden spiral
2. the gathering wilderness
3. song of the tomb
4. end of all times
5. the coffin ships
6. tragedys birth (the martyrs fire)
7. cities carved in stone

The limited first edition of "The Gathering Wilderness" will be released in a luxury version with special packaging and will also include a bonus-DVD!

"The Gathering Wilderness" is due for release the 7th of February, 2005!"
