Hopefully not as "good" as Watershed was.

I have no doubts it will be good as they mentioned. I just hope it will be another step forward in terms of musical diversity as "Watershed" was.

Hmmm. I'm guessing that Steven Wilson will be the new keyboardist. (atleast a session member)

If ever there was a time to listen to everything Opeth has put out, it is this time. I've only heard Watershed. Fan boys/girls, tell me the best Opeth album to start with and/or your favourite Opeth album.

Best album IMO, Blackwater Park. Also is the one which most fans coincide
My fav after that one is Still Life
Damnation is the album everybody likes (all ballads, no metal or growls) and if you liked Watershed most likely you will also like Ghost Reveries
I really envy you and all the guys that are about to "discover" Opeth, It was a really exciting and joyful process for me.

Blackwater Park is the closest you'll get to a consensus but there really isn't one as opinions vary dramatically. I only ever listen to Blackwater Park and Watershed, even though Watershed is regarded by a lot of people as one of the weakest. I don't like Ghost Reveries even though that's regarded as a strong one. You get the picture really.

Blackwater Park is what I would and did start with.
I like Ghost Reveries the best though.

I'm not sure about this... I didn't like Ghost Reveries and Watershed much... Agree with Unhealer saying that Blackwater Park is their best effort...
It would be cool for the band to go back a bit in style, I think they're slowly decreasing the quality of their releases, so I kinda distrust their "good" impression of the material...

Hmmm... I don't think 'good' is enough for Opeth. If this album will actually be good I'll be disappointed.

From what I can gather, Opeth always seem to be relatively 'down to Earth' with regards to their status and popularity. I remember an interview where Mikael himself suggested that maybe there was too much hype about the band!
So they don't want/need to sound arrogant, and are being humourous as well by not doing the typical thing bands do with a new album, saying "this is our best album yet, the best music that men have ever made!" or whatever, but just saying it's "good"!

I'm certainly looking forward to this one. They are great musicians, and while the last one may not have been my favorite (it was still great, though), this one will be worth investigating.

There is no single album in Opeth discography that outshines all the others. My personal favourites are Still Life, Deliverance (the one I discovered Opeth through), Ghost Reveries, Morningrise and Watershed. But I suggest you start with the first album (Orchid) and go until Watershed to feel for yourself the band's evolution.
