Well they are just brilliant musicians that have been around for a long time now (60's). Ian Anderson is a diverse musician and extremely talented Flute player. I have seen them live, and i think if you ever have the oppurtunity, make sure you see them.
I own the albums:
Aqualung
Minstrel In The Gallery
Stormwatch
The Broadsword And The Beast
Living In The Past

What are some other great albums i am missing? I need some more

Don't miss one of their first releases "Thick as a brick" which is a concept album with one song. It's just brilliant, bringing together folk, rock, minstrel, quasi-classical, musical theater, and progressive sensibilities, and creating an atmosphere I can't describe with words!!

i will admit that jethro tull are good musicians but i have a little bit of a grudge on them for stealing that metal grammy from metallica. Jethro Tull is not metal never will be metal. I dont know if the people that were picking the grammy winners were doing drus or what but they must have lost their friggin minds. Well it dont matter though that was almost twenty years ago.

Jethro Tull is one of my favorite classic rock bands, and Aqualung is one of my favorite all time albums and songs.. Cross-Eyed Mary is also an awsome song with an amazing flute solo .. Have any of you heard the Iron Maiden cover of Cross-Eyed Mary? It's not as good as the origional, but it's Maiden...

It's not jethro Tull's fault for getting that award, it's the organiser's. You shouldn't hold the grudge against Tull. Of course Jethro Tull are not metal.:suicide:

They're coming to Argentina, to the Luna Park the 20th of April, if I'm not saying it wrong... It depends on the cost, maybe I'm gonna see them. They are really good.

I'm also gonna see them

Jethro Tull are a nice remembrance from my old hippie times... I still keep my old original copy of "Thick As A Brick" (the masterpiece of folk prog along with Los Jaivas' "Las Alturas De Machu Picchu), and listen to it from time to time.... although I know little, better said nothing from the rest of their discography... just saw once a live DVD in my friend's house.

Unfortunately, I am too late... I thought there was still some time left, as I knew that they were going to play just a few weeks ago but I thought it would be later, but after reading your post I checked and I noted that I'm late for one week... anyway... it would had been a good experience but it wasn't possible

I had liked Aqualung [71] for ages since my father owned a few albums, while over time This Was [68], Benefit [70] and Stand Up [69] have become my favourites as they're pretty straight hard rock and damn good at it. Well... SU and especially TW had more jazz & blues touches. He also had War Child [74] which I don't like quite so much, inconsistent and fairly weird but there are some bloody good songs in Sealion, Sealion 2 and Saturation (unfortunately those last two are not on the original release).

I've got around to buying myself the expanded editions of Catfish Blues and Rock Island, consecutive albums from around 1990 and I look forward to acquiring many more. I prefer Island's hard rock (check the AWESOME The Whaler's Dues, Big Riff and Mando, and the title track) over Catfish's softer, folky bluesy material, though its bonus live track Jump Start is a brilliant song - with the "heavy metal road crew" brought onto the stage Actually, that being said, about half of Rock Island is acoustic/soft...
I reckon Aqualung and Locomotive Breath at least are pretty close to being metal... consider they were written in 1971 or earlier

edit: Oh yes, we have the collection Living in the Past as well, there's a bunch of masterpieces on there too so everyone should grab it

Another note for this awfully long post - have you guys noticed how the Eagles' hit Hotel California stole the chord progression of my favourite track on Stand Up, We Used to Know

Good luck Omni I forgot to mention I have Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play but I haven't really listened to them due to the extended play times.

Regarding nick35's comments on the awards, it should be noted that the metal and hard rock categories were combined that year. Who cares about winning Grammys though, they're really for poptards.

Benefit and crest of a knave and passion play are missing from your list. My favorite is thick as a brick I bought the album in 1973, Of course I have the cd now, the 25th year special edition. I saw them live at the River Rock Casino in September 2007. It was an awesome show. Martin Barre can still rock Hard, he is simply a great guitar player. This band defies classification.

Jethro Tull, named after, hmm what was it... a 19th century anthropologist? Something like that.

These guys are seriously insane, and if none of you have ever seen live footage of this band, do so immediately. You will see precisely this: A bunch of hippies playing good music, and one super-hippie in the front, standing on one foot for 2 hours singing crazy stuff, rolling his eyes up in his head, and playing the flute. He was always on one foot! That was the coolest thing about Ian Anderson. Their music was really good, totally different than what anyone had ever heard, mostly because of the flute and the heaviness, two things that normally would not be found in the same sentence. And it's not like, all flutey-like music. It really rocks. But like Sehkmet said, listen to the entire song "Thick as a Brick". You ever heard a 45-minute song? Talk about epic, and this was in the early 70s, when epic was Iron Butterfly.

Yeah my dad had a few of the original vinyls, the original Thick as a Brick Vinyl came with the whole newspaper giving hilarious jokes about the album concept.

For those who don't know, Thick as Brick is "supposedly" about a young boy who writes a long, vulgar poem analyzing society and a range of sexual perversions... he lives in this small english town and wins an award for his poem, but it is later taken back from him because of its vulgarity... in the original vinyl it came with the small town's local newspaper... which tells small local town news and the story of the boy... it is absolutely hilarious, but you need to read it very closely to get the jokes.

for example under the congratulations for having a baby section: there is a Mr John and Jane Mrs X (can't remember the real names) who have just had a baby.

a page later under the congratulations for getting married section: Congratulations to Mr John and Mrs Jane X on their recent marriage.

a page later under the happy birthday section: Congratulations to Mr John X on celebrating his 15th birthday.

None of this is obvious unless you read the paper carefuly, i think there was also a two page long article about a rabbit...

The song thick as a brick is over 40 minutes long and the lyrics are the small boys poem... (the small boys 19 year old girlfriend is on the cover of the paper and she is "inadvertently" exposing herself quite discreetly)

There is just so much hilarity in this package its difficult to take it all in... i don't know if the cd version comes with the newspaper, i have the 25th anniversary cd edition which did come with extras and the newspaper.

neither the town or the boy actually exist
