More Specific Album Voting?

I had a suggestion regarding the album-voting system. Because I feel somewhat limited when voting for albums, I think that a more specific album-voting system would be quite useful. I think that a system in which the user, instead of being limited to voting by whole rounded numbers, is allowed to vote by .5 numbers would be very helpful, for not all the time do whole numbers reflect people's opinions on albums. Yes, I understand that users can fully elaborate their opinions on the comment pages, but quite honestly, a more efficient voting system would prove to be quite concise for users when they rate albums in their own personal collections.

Feedback would be appreciated, thank you.

I'd like to see 6 as a slightly beyond average & 5 as the slightly below average.

Not to be a whiney bitch, but i dont like the colours of the numbers,( i raised my dislike before)

so an 8 is yellow, but on the rating scale thats very good? shouldnt it be green?

I also think that a perfect ten should be white, as its a "godly" album IYO.

I also like adding the .5's in.

I think those colours' main priority is to work as a sign of our (voters/raters) collective rate, rather than being the perfect colour for our individual likings.

For example this page link

I suppose that is correct. It just bugs me when i rate something very-good that it turns out a mediocre yellow :/

Fine with the current system. generally i round down. there are enough people who over inflate scores round these parts that chopping .5/.6 off of one rating won't hurt much.

if you want to score albums with decimals, you can always write a review.

Yeah, I'm on the negative side here. Like BitterCOld said, if you want a more specific rating, write a review. I can't really see any great benefits from it, and cosmetically it would make the drop-down selection for the voting scale look like absolute garbage. Picture the current drop-down selection doubled. In order to make it look good, it would need to be changed to like some sort of dial or wheel of some kind, which I see as a lot of unnecessary amount of work tweaking a system that's perfectly fine as it is...In fact, ours is already more specific than a good chunk of sites, who have the ratings for their reviews out of 5.

I'd like to add my view to the discussion.

As it is now, I think the tags used ("perfect", "excellent", "very good" etc.) are not fitting, because they cause an inflation in the scores. For example, an album with an average rating of 8.9 is considered really awesome, while 8.5 is pretty average in comparison. It feels like anything less than an 8 is seen as bad, on the site, while it actually is a good score.

I have mainly 4 objections to the current scale.

1. 8 is too high to be "very good".
2. 6 is too high to be "average".
The greater part of albums are somewhere between "average" and "very good", with a few exceptions on either side I think. This leaves almost no room to accentuate the rating of such albums.
3. "worst ever" would actually mean that only one album can get that rating: a far too strict name I think.
4. The colors used. Since 1-4 are equally red, you get the impression that those albums are the scum of the earth.

I would like to suggest a slightly modified scale.

10. Flawless
9. Masterpiece
8. Excellent
7. Very good
6. Good
5. So-so
4. Bad
3. Very bad
2. Horrible
1. Worthless

Also, if you would change the colors to:

10 - Blue (or white as Willy said, or whatever)
8-9 - Green
6-7 - Yellow
4-5 - Orange
2-3 - Red
1 - Gray

we would probably get a bigger spread in the scores, thus making it easier using the scores as means of finding music.
This is just a suggestion, and I would also be positive to the 0.5 modification.

What do you guys think?

Totally agree with what Kuroboshi said (actually came back here to say just that, only to be beaten to it ), with the exception of 10 being "flawless," because that's just not possible and it'll discourage people from ever using it, so I think 10 should be "Masterpiece" and 9 should remain "excellent."
I really like the scale MyAnimeList uses:
10 - Masterpiece
9 - Excellent
8 - Very Good
7 - Good
6 - Fine
5 - Average
4 - Bad
3 - Very Bad
2 - Horrible
1 - Appalling
(Maybe make 4 be "not good" and 3 be "bad" and it'd be my ideal rating scale)

Unfortunately it still won't fix the skewed ratings, not unless they're all wiped from the database, which is a horrible solution.

If MS actually decides to change the rating names, we should have some kind of vote about it.

And, as Crucifux said, it probably won't fix the skewed ratings (at least at once), but it is a step along the way, no?

EDIT: Besides, I think 10's should be extremely rare. Maybe 'Flawless' is too strong, but we need something better than 'Masterpiece'.

Isn't a 10 vote described as "perfect"? That's what I have trouble with because I don't feel that anything is perfect. So, I've never given out a 10. I might change that though, because it seems silly to limit my voting by one of the options available.

Even if I know I'm pretty meaningless ( ) in the site in comparation of the users who are discussing about this topic, but I totally agree with the +0.5 idea. There have been loads of times in which I could not easily decide how to rate an album, an half vote would be welcome.

that's the crux of it. 8 is "Very good" but 'round these parts largely means "it's sucks."

Metal fans are hardly rational. all adding .5 will do is satisfy the inner nerd of some users... it will just further inflate scores already inflated scores. for every users who actually looks at the current scale and votes accordingly there are tens, if not hundreds who jsut click 1's, 2's, 9's, and 10's.

the collective scores don't mean shit now and will, overall, mean less when scores of 9's just become 9.5's.

i'm seeing/saying this as the site's resident Duke Nukem, destroyer of dozens of bullshit abusers and tens of thousands of bullshit votes.

I can understand and respect your opinion, but I don't like it for two reasons. 1) It's such a depressive outlook. I think we should work for improving stuff, even if everyone does not abide the rules, gives a shit, etc. 2) Maybe the whole metal community is not rational, but I think you give people less credit than they deserve. It might just be the system that makes people stupid, right? And, there IS actually a lot of intelligent discussion going on around here.

The only decent scale that works is 'yes', 'no' and 'meh'. Life's hard, get used to it, and vote in round numbers.
