Mike Portnoy - Working On New Project With Symphony X Singer
Haven't heard from former Avenged Sevenfold drummer Mike Portnoy in at least three weeks... time for an update!
In a Twitter message a few hours ago, Portnoy reveals he is currently working on a new project with Symphony X frontman Russell Allen (also known from Allen/Lande and Star One).
In Portnoy's own words: "VERY excited about a new project I'm working on [with] one my [favorite] singers in the world: my bro, Sir Russell Allen. Wait till you hear this shit!"
The debut album of his other project - featuring Steve Morse (Deep Purple, ex-Kansas), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock's Beard), Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs) and Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev, Endochine) - is tentatively due later in the year.

I hope Michael Romeo plays guitar for this. It sucks how Portnoy has become the annoying little brother of prog metal with all these little things here and there. Still one hell of a drummer though.

I particularly like how his 20 year stint in DT is eclipsed entirely by a touring slot in Avenged Sevenfold, forevermore branding him 'that former Avenged Sevenfold drummer'...not harbouring a grudge against Portnoy, I trust, Thryce?

Seems to me he should focus on one thing at a time. Otherwise, these projects of his could be in danger of slumping into mediocrity. Either that, or maybe he should just start a new BAND. Not a "project" with an all-star cast, an actual BAND that he can focus on.

I think he's just lost without Dream Theater, and is probably still smarting from their decision to not accept him back into the band. As for this new project, anything featuring Russell Allen will get my attention, seeing as he is one of my favourite vocalists. Though as someone else said above, Im much more interested in hearing the new Symphony X material. lol
