Some people righteously claim that this is not a real Metallica release and thus it can't be viewed as such. I agree. Metallica decided to co-operate with Lou Reed in his interpretation of Alban Berg's opera based on Frank Wedekind's plays "Erdgeist" and "Die Büchse der Pandora". The history behind that opera is as complicated and dramatic as one can imagine, assuming what a dark story it tells.

Lulu brings back Metallica in a collaboration album with Lou Reed. A German visionary named Frank Wedekind wrote a collection of plays about a woman called Lulu who was both a muse and a mystery, the first form of woman. Most of the songs have death, sexuality, love and spite themes. Although it's not a Metallica album, the expectation was off the charts but the result is terrible.

The worst thing you can possibly do is treat this like a Metallica album. It is not. Lulu is a Lou Reed album that just so happens to feature the guys from Metallica as his backing band. Of course, Metallica still had to go and put their name on it, which recklessly raised people's expectations, and the heavy criticism weighed at this album is largely true no matter how you spin it. Nonetheless, while this was a disappointment, it is not totally devoid of merit, and more of an interesting experiment than a Son-of-St. Anger-sized failure.

I read an interview which James said that this would be not a Metallica neither a Lou Reed album, and that probably neither of their fans will like it...

At least he isn't completely unaware of peoples' reactions.

Yeah, never had high hopes for this one anyways... Hope their new "real Metallica" album, whenever it comes, won't be disappointing and generically boring but I think that is too much to ask...

How did they waste it? As far as I'm aware, the whole album was written by Lou Reed. Metallica just contributed with instrumentation, and arrangement of the material...

Had Metallica actually written stuff for the album, I'd have been disappointed. But it seems like they haven't wasted any material on this project, as Lou Reed composed the whole thing.

True. Lou Reed and Metallica just don't mix well together, and so I think the actual music itself doesn't really matter much at the end of the day. No matter what the music was like, the album wouldn't have been very good...

Had Metallica actually written stuff for the album ...

Lou Reed wrote the lyrics, but the music is a collaboration between both, and for example, the riff on "Mistress Dread", its so "Metal" , i dont think it can be written by Lou, and it is really good, it would perfectly fit in a Metallica album ..

Some great moments, some awful moments.
With some more listens I'll figure out which of them is prominent.

Overall, it looks like a good idea that didn't turn out as expected on the practice.

When I first heard it, I experienced shell shock. This is worth than their mid to late 90's attempt to making music. I do not put down Lou Reed for the music, but together they just don't mix well. Metallica just needs to do whatever Touring they have left to do and get back into the studio and go back to the drawing board of making a follow up to a surprisingly awesome comeback record "Death Magnetic".

That still doesn't necessarily mean Metallica actually wrote any music for the album... Lars gets writing credits on most Metallica songs even though he never writes any music. Lars contributes a lot to the arrangement of the songs, and that's why he gets writing credits in Metallica.

First impression, I like it and I'm fully prepared to be the only one that does.
BTW this has to be one of the weirdest years in metal ever with the releases from Opeth,Morbid Angel, Queensriech and Metallica.

Well, I wan't really expecting the latest Queensryche to be any good anyway, so it's hard to really call that a disappointment. The new Morbid Angel was a disappointment, even though it's better than Queensryche's latest. I will listen to "Lulu", but I didn't like "The View", so I'm certainly not expecting to like the album...

They probably wanted to release it on Halloween so people would be scared of this abomination. I can't wait to see the ratings and can't wait to see the lyrics, if anyone cares to buy the CD and upload them.

Holy fuck this is bad. Everybody knows I hate Metallica with a passion but I decide to check this out because of the so bad but so hilarious lyrics. I already bailed out with The View, it's that bad. Metallica keep on embarrassing themselves.

Well, first of all, I read an honest, brutal and yet funny review on it and got curious. never really cared about Metallica but after the first reviews I just had to give it a shot. so...
what a weird experience that was. the album definitely had some good moments... immediately destroyed by an old fart mumbling... there are some good songs, some actual highlights, but these moments don't last long - on the other hand, the rather boring parts last way too long.

one more thing, Lou Reed seems to be capable of reading my mind by saying ""I wish that I could kill you!"... yeah, man... BINGO. just what I thought.

anyway, Metallica dared to produce an album COMPLETELY different and I respect that - same goes out to Lou Reed. BUT, damn, can't you folks just stick to the roots and keep doing what you can do best... thrash metal on one side and some more mumbling on the other...
