There were too many sex-related topics in the general forum, and while I'm all for stuff sex-related, I thought I'd give everyone a break from it all with some technology stuff. For those unfamiliar, the term "Browser Wars" is the name given to the competition for dominance in the web browser marketplace. The term is most commonly used to refer to two specific periods of time: the particularly intense struggle between Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator during the late 1990s, and the growing threat which Mozilla Firefox poses to Internet Explorer from 2004 onward. Full Wikipedia article on the topic can be found here.

In this topic, we can discuss the different types of browsers, including which browser is your favorite. Of course, if you're going to state which browser is your favorite, gives some reasons as to why so that you are not spamming. My favorite browser would of course have to be Mozilla Firefox. The reason why I like it can be summed up in three words: security, reliability, tabs.

I love Firefox. Nothing beats Adblock. I do use IE and Opera on occasion though.

The thing I dont like about Adblock is that even though it blocks the ad, its replaced by one I cant block, then after a while it all resets.

What exactly do you mean? I've had no problems with it so far. Sure the ads change, but the key is to use as many wildcards as possible. There wasn't yet a thing I couldn't block with it, except for the newer google text ads...

The things I couldn't block that were replaced was those advertisement games. Though sometimes my NoScript takes care of ads.

I use Opere as my promary browser but I have Firefox installed too just in case that I need another browser. The reason why I use Opera is subjective, I just like it better than Firefox. It has integrated mail client, it looks better and I realy like the new spped dial... All in all, a gret all-around browser for everyday use .

I think you can make it to where you don't have to do that.

Check out firefox add-on's buddy. You can find many different color themes to change color and look, add-ons have about almost anything you need.

Too bad since with Firefox, you could have the automatic spellchecker... That would probably help you, regarding the arguments about your spelling in another thread.

I have FoxyTunes add-on for Firefox. I am using WMP 10. Why does the song title not show up in the little slide bar thing? It used to do it before I did a system recovery!

Opera all the way. It is faster than Firefox, not to mention it comes very lite, meaning you have complete control over what you want or don't want on it. Not to mention, Firefox has failed in several ways since I started using it, which is why I switched to being a full time Opera user.

Strange, when I tried Opera I found no way of customizing anything. Explain to me how FireFox has failed you.

First off, Firefox closes every time I try to start a download. No this is not a virus, I have scanned my computer infinitly, and have found nothing. Yes, I have tried to reinstall it, and it is the same way. I also have made sure that all my firewalls/security programs let Firefox through. However, it continues to fail. Not to mention, Opera loads webpages faster.

So then how do you know it loads pages faster if FireFox would not open for you?

I said when I start a download, ya know, like trying get a file off a Http Server. It opens regular webpages fine, but as soon as I try to download any thing, it simply turns off.

FIRE FUCKING FOX! Ive used IE, im now using FF, and I can surely say that Ill never return to that microsoft garbage again! FireFox is 10 times better and safer, and it keeps improving all the time. Ive never tried Opera, but as I see the rating, its likely that I never will.

Yes, I tried everything possible. NoAd Hosts Files, access denial, boosting my firewall, IP Blockers, it was a mess. I just recently cleared everything and reinstalled my friend's custom stripped down version of Windows XP and am using a Sygate firewall, so far so good.

The thing I dont like about Adblock is that even though it blocks the ad, its replaced by one I cant block, then after a while it all resets.

IMO Adblock alone is quite weak. You should use Adblock Filterset.G Updater in conjunction with the main Adblock plugin.

"This is a companion extension to Adblock or Adblock Plus and should be used in conjunction with it. This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days. Filterset.G is an excellent set of filters maintained by G for Adblock that blocks most ads on the internet."

Happy ad-free surfing!

I think I have that. But that problem I stated seems to be only with myspace. Having NoScript helps a ton as well!

Normally, you just can't remove Internet Explorer if you're running a Windows OS. But not using it should be equal to not having it, regarding security.

I heard that Bill Gates wanted it so that it is impossible to delete it. It makes sense to me because why else would so many people use a crappy browser? If I find a source I will post it, but until then im not claiming what I said to be reliable.

Normally, you just can't remove Internet Explorer if you're running a Windows OS. But not using it should be equal to not having it, regarding security.

A friend of mine actually deleted IE on his computer. He decided he was going to go for Firefox permanently, but he uninstalled IE first, and at first I was literally rofl-ing because we thought for a bit that he then didn't have a browser to browse the web so he could go to the Firefox webpage and download his new browser! Utterly hilarious at the time. Anyhow, we later found out that when you uninstall IE, you get Windows Explorer as your fill in browser.

Anyway, I'm a total Firefox fan. Tabbed browsing and bookmark folders just win me over any time. I know with IE7 they woke up to themselves and realised that every other browser in the whole world was using tabbed browsing so they included this, but Firefox is still superior.

The other great feature of Firefox is the great customisability of the layout. I have added icons, and two drop down bookmark folder buttons right next to my address bar, exactly where I want them. That was one thing that turned me off Opera. Speaking of Opera, I noticed that the speed dial was a reasonable feature, but Firefox still has more to offer me.

Another positive of Firefox are the add-ons you can get. I've fallen in love with such things as the Web Developer toolbar, OpenSearchFox and FireFTP. And there are 1000's of add-ons out there. It's great.

When it comes down to Opera/Konqueror/etc versus IE though, I have to chose Opera. Most IE versions render webpages terribly. And just the ignorance that comes behind IE is enough. For too long they thought they were to be the one and only browser. And some people just use it because it's "the standard". So I'm glad things are changing on that front. Actually I even saw a TV advertisement the other day for some website, and it was being browsed in Firefox. It was the first time I'd seen such a thing, but it is good to see.

Regarding web development though, it's good to have an array of browsers, so that you can see how your website looks in all of them. As I spoke before about IE, too many people make websites solely designed for IE. One of my lecturers at University actually told me a story of how a company got successfully sued because their website did not render at all with Safari. And another company got sued once for not including accessibility features for hearing impaired users. But that's getting a bit off topic.

So after all that, my vote of course goes to the 'fox
