So I have this weird theory that if you put a whale in your album cover, it instantly becomes a metal classic.

One counterexample and we can close the thread.

EDIT: On a second look, it probably has to be a white whale.

I wonder if that applies to albums outside of metal, too.

Ok, I probably sensationalized that, but you can't deny they are highly regarded modern metal albums. Here in metalstorm (and I believe in lots of other webzines/magazines) they all have good ratings and references (except Leviathan, but that is just here) and are the best output of these acclaimed bands according to most of their fanbase.

Matsadon can be, but Ahab is way to underground to be classic, Gojira is band what I hate and it sucks
But vhales dont make album classic, it is music, songs and so on,
Album artwork hmmmmm maybe but not this time

You could be right about Ahab. And of course, I think we all understand the whale on the cover isn't the formula for great music, it's just something funny to think about.

So just because you hate it it is not a classic? Wow, the ego on this guy is huge

From Mars To Sirius is considered a classic by many. So, please crawl back under the rock you came from.

I tryd to listen this band, I try to watch videos never worked for me ,

I would say landscapes like 1th Borknagar and In the Nightside Eclipse such type album artworks makes album classic, one more conspiracy

Yeah K7, but he's saying you don't have to like it for something to be a classic. It's not one person who decides what's classic or not, it's a majority.

And "landscape" albums being classics? Not really. Kreator's "Endorama" is kinda "landescapy", not a classic. More the opposite.

Leviathan is somehow scored highest of all Mastodon albums here on MS so I am wondering where you get the notion that the album doesn't get a good rating here. It averages 8.5 after 482 or so votes. Which I personally can't understand since Remission I find superior in every aspect.

I would argue that these are all albums generally referred to as "great" by the majority, but a minority refer to them as classics - just like a minority refer to them as shit.

Of course, this will all be easier to debate in another 10 years. I'm sure when albums like Master of Puppets were being released, people thought it's an instant classic. But the only way to be sure is letting a decade or two pass and let the public decide.

Well, I actually said that comparing to the other two. They have 8.8 and 8.9 ratings while Leviathan 8.5; and Crack The Skye has a 8.6 score, so it's not the highest score for a Mastodon record. It also doesn't have any awards like the others, so on a first look it's not a highly regarded album by the users here.

You are HIGH.

Three whales out of, like, 100K metal album covers is not statistically significant.

Leviathan (or anything by Mastodon) does not appear on this site's Top 200 list.

Your theory is whack.

I'm stumped even thinking of another metal album cover depicting a whale. I found it amusing to find in the online urban dictionary a reference to 'whalecore' as "a "genre" of music used to describe bands with at least one album in which the cover artwork displays a whale". So I guess Mastodon, Ahab and Gojira are whalecore - according to that definition.

my good that is a totally lame subgenre description. First of all noine of those bands sound anything alike so it's impossible to chuck them in the same subgenre and secondly only Mastodon has any hardcore in it to warrant the core suffix.
