my faves are fantasy and politics, with bands like megadeth, iced earth, maiden and sepultura having my favourite lyrics, like on "dante's inferno", "phantom of the opera", "the bard's song", "the power of one" are all wonderful songs, and "holy wars", "hangar 18", and "refuse resist", just straight out flaming, bitching and lashing about what's wrong and what their problem is.

i choose fantasy though, since it's a more imaginative field, you can just go totally mindfuck random and no one will bother assessing the reality behind your lyrics, not like in politics where most of the inspiration comes from real events.

hm, let see....

Satanism: I'm indifferent to it. It lies far away from my stand point, but if you want to have satanist-themed lyrics, I'm not going to stop you. But please avoid stupid clicthés as "Hail Satan, sloughter christians", it's just embarassing and even a bit childish.

Gore: I don't see the point of these lyrics, nowdays it all seem to be a competition about who out-grosses who, is not even funny anymore. It another thing if you blend it with the human mind though(a person going graduatly insane for example). If you have a clever story arc that explains the gory parts, instead of mindless lyrics like "fuck the limless cadeveras", it can actually be quite good.

Politics: Can be really good(especially if you agree with the lyrics). The lyrics doesn't have to be over all complicated, as long as it hits you with impact. I'm also glad to see that in metal the political lyrics isn't only reserved to moronic extreme leftish lyrics or braindead nazi lyrics, it covers the hole political spectrum.

Norse: Nowdays "norse" and "call to arms" type of lyrics has blended together, and frankly I hate it. There is nothing worse when you have lyrics like "Hail Thor/Odin, let fight for our glory so we can join them in Valhalla". This mythology contains so many intresting myths and get all we get is stuff about Odin, Thor and Valhalla. I hate it. If they explored this mythology a little more, writing stuff about the midgard serpent, or perhaps about the fenriswolf and Loki's betreyal? It certainly would make these types of lyrics alot more intresting. Btw, what about the other mythologies? Many band uses folklores and their own mythologies, so wouldn't be better to re-name this option to simple "mythologies"?

introspective/psyhological/sentimental: I can see why this is so popular. We all like something to reconise ourselves in, and we all seem to have the urge to feel smart and "deep", in a matter of speaking. These kind of lyrics are perfect for that. And I'm no exeption, I also like these kind of lyrics.

"Call to arms": Unless you have a historical event, leave these kind of lyrics out. Seriously.

spiritual/religious: I guess nature lyrics is a part of it too? Here it's almost impossible to fail with the lyrics as it depends so much on the music if it will be "spiritual" or not. It can be nice to listen to it once in awhile.

horror/sci-fi/fantasy: Here a good story arc is essential, without it's just embarassing. (Horror lyrics and gore lyrics would make a really good combination, IMO)

Historical: Absolutly, just be sure that you don't bore the listener to death with the lyrics.

If I would vote today, I would choose historical, but sadly I've allready voted in the past. The reason why I choose this theme is beacuse you can combine it with so many other themes, from gore to spiritual. The only thing I can't see it be combined with is satanism.

well, i'm not any black metal music fan, but think about when varg vikerness atributed his church burning to the forceful christianising of norway, so satanism + history can be combined

You have a point there, but I doubt that it would make a good combination though.

I don't like how Satanist and Spiritual/religious are placed seperately.

I agree, some Satanic bands like Deathspell Omega and Watain have much more deep and spiritual approach in their lyrics than most Christian metal lyrics I've read. (To be honest, Christian metal lyrics are often fairly stupid).

Enslaved have written lyrics about Loki and Fenris and stuff, and they have explored their ancestral norse themes pretty well, especially on newer albums where they've dealt more with the symbolism and the worldview of their Norse ancestors than with myths themelves. Anyway, I agree that most "norse" lyrics are somewhat dull, especially hate it when it's combined with stupid NS shit a la "Thor's mighty hammer of our white ancestral aryan pagan pride will chrush the untermensch of ZOG! Aarrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhh!!!" "My omnipotent white pagan werewolf phallos of Aryan ancestral nordic pride will penetrate the untermensch jewish anus of Jesus in the dark eternal forest where the proud Aryan wind echoes with the whispers of my Aryan Forefathers!Yeaargghhh!!!"Well, I made those lines up, but there are quite a few ns bands who come close or even manage to surpass these lines of mine in terms of cheesiness/stupidity.

Pretty much. It can encompass large variety of themes from Manowar songs about Thor to runic symbolism and in-depth stuff about viking mythology to historical lyrics about battles and such to "call to arms " style stuff (again in the Manowar territory:lol: ) to ns (national socialist) stuff about white supremacy mixed with shallow approach to Norse paganism.

Then I must check those albums out! I agree, mixing it with NS is even worse, espcially since the vikings themselves were (sort of)both emmigrants and immigrants. I don't like NS lyrics as I think the ideology is bullshit, but if it's only combined with political lyrics I can tolerate it.

As for me, any lyrics are attractive, if they have meaning, when they're not just lines of different words, that repeat and have no meaning. For me, the best lyrics are rhymed. I even like most of all songs, which lyrics where written by poets, especially from earlier centuries.
I votes for the first variant, as it is the most understandable for me theme..

just joking

i'm just tired that the main reasoning behind the hatred of 'satanist' lyrics is the fact that they are badly written and do not provoke thoughts.. Imo there are just as many introspective, fantasy themed, horristic etcetera lyrics that are badly written and/or are shallow. They are just not as talked-about as lousy satanic lyrics.

Lousy 'satanist' lyrics are the most well known, because this is what a non black metal head sees when he/she encounters this genre. "oh satan, rape my wife". i know this is the stereotype. But there are many well written, deep and thought provoking satanic lyrics. Deathspell Omega is the obvious example, but there are others. Take Glorior Belli, Obscurus Advocam, Ondskapt, Ofermod, Mortuus and even Watain for example.

read some of those lyrics. you still don't have to vote for 'satanistic' lyrics. but at least come out of the shadow of ignorance.

I chose political lyrics. I also like introspective, religious and drug lyrics. I love it when you really have to dig into the lyrics in order to see the message. I like it when there's doubt about what exactly the song is about. Like Master of Puppets, it could be about drugs, the government and religion. We know now that it's about drugs, but when just reading the lyrics, you can apply it to all of the mentioned topics. Love it.
