I voted Petrucci, he's very technical, fast, and also very versatile.
Michael Romeo is missing in that poll, actually I don't know why Tolkki is listed there He's good, but not THAT good...

wow. i left coming in this thread so late
i voted for Yngwie Malmsteen of course. he is the first guitarist that i listened to and just sat there with my mouth open. hahaha
great great stuff to listen to
and then from there he has gone on and influenced so many other players
but whatever Yngwie Malmsteen might be one of the 'best' players
but isnt my favorite, my favorite isnt on this list

ok maybe is not the best but for me is mr. timo tolkki 'cos i love stratovarius specially destiny (the song) and some new guitarists like herman li and sam totman from dragonforce and jani liimatainen from sonata arctica:gunner:
Yes i totally agree!
Tolkki is the man! Though I like Malmsteen, I refuse to believe that he is the better guitar player!

I am not sure that Timo Tolkki is better than any of these guitarist but he is my first choice, I like his style, riffs and solos both, he plays with emotions and sstill he have great interesting and quality songs, I can't listen Yngwie and co, they are to boring, I admit that they are uber good guitarists but so boring for me. Second opinion would be Marty Friedman...

Yes, its useless. As if the thread creator has listened to all guitarists and he is able to judge the 6 best ones.

Hmm, I wrote that a long time ago... and now I don't think topics without the other choice are useless. I actually think most vs topics are kinda useless, like best band from country X... has anyone really heard all material (and think about all the future materials) from every band in... let's say Sweden? If a topic should be made then there shouldn't be an "other" choice... the creator of the topic should have a clear thought on why he chose just those bands listed.

OK but you dont understand that you dont vote criticising if the guitarist plays in your favourite band, but you criticise his playing ability...:dpopcorn:

Is the ability of Timo Tolki not enough good to vote? He is great guitar player even in Stratovarius or his own band. I said I love Stratovarius that showing also a band sample of his works...Anyways I didnt vote because I hesitate between Timo and Steve Vai. IMO the thread should be changed its name as best guitar virtuoso player, to prevent confusing. If not my choice with the reason of Stratovarius still fits

I wound go with Kiko from Angra, because he is not only skilled, but he is also VERY creative. Timo is good however he is not as creative as Kiko.

Agreed. Even if I could vote I wouldnt because theres no "other" slot, also known as the Michael Angelo Batio slot.

...there are few missing but you mentioned my favorite of all time Paul Gilbert, "Racer X!" a monster of guitar playing he has a unique technique and soul that can't be compared nor matched, the guy might be goofy but he has the touch for the instrument. (big influence)

I don't really class these guys as metal guitarists they are more solo/shred artist's, anyone agree?
Metal guitarists would be like kerry king, kirk hammet, dave mustaine etc.
I guess there should have been an other option for these guys.

Kerry King isnt that great at all...hes OK, but next to the likes of John Petrucci or Michael Angelo or Yngwie hes a drunken toddler with broken fingers.

I believe there is no such thing as "a best guitarist" or "best band in a certain genre". There are many very talented and technical guitarist in the world, but not a single one of them is the best guitarist ever. But if I have to pick someone from the list, I would choose for John Petrucci, because of his technique and incredible talent. Btw, I must say, every guitarist in this list is very talented.
