If that is the case we can only see it as a possibility. I remember something though, in this documentary I saw Nocturno saying that old bands make "bread" referring to the old raw Black Metal and that he understood that some may get tired of that and decide to make "cake" (referring to bands adding synth to Black Metal) and that they could get tired of cake too. So I get that sense of humor you talk about. Now, he seemed to not mind other bands playing style so I don't know.

Actually he said something more like this:

We make cake others make cookies, but you grow tired of cookies too, so its your choise.

I have the video on my computer =

Fenriz seems to have an awesome sense of humor ^^

I'd like someone to explain why Darkthrone is so great in their opinion.

Will give it an abbreviated shot. Some of it has to do with attitudes, some the music, and some is that "X" factor which I cannot entirely explain.

I like their attitude and approach. As a 20 year fan of punk music, I admire Darkthrone's extremely DIY attitude. Grab a couple cases of beer, spend a weekend in the studio, and crank an album out.

Musically, it's the combination of some awesome riffs, some more of that same punk influence (even more pronounced in their most recent works... ), the occasionally catchy lyrics, and the atmosphere. The earlier records are particularly bleak, or "necro" in the appropriate vernacular. I also like the fact that a couple songs on the "Ravishing Grimness" and "Plaguewielder" era seem a little strecthed - giving some riffs an almost Godfleshian 'noise' type feel.

I also like the fact it's tinkered "Meat and Potatoes" - when you buy a Darkthrone record, you know what you are getting into. Some (most) people think they got worse with age, but I view the improved production as a good thing. Some songs were not as memorable as classic tracks off of "Transylvanian Hunger", but the album seemed like great, coherent listening experiences. To me they've managed to maintain without becoming a stale, color-by-numbers formulaic band.

Finally, the "X" factor that I cannot quite put in to words. I have no idea exactly why I can love 'Band X' and be completely ambivalent about 'Band Y' when they both make similar music... this holds true with old 80's wave, punk, and extreme metal with me.

I have no idea why.

Some bands prick my neckhairs up and make me break out the "devil horns" \m/

Some do nothing much at all.

Some just leave me glancing at my watch and the track counter, waiting impatiently for the album to end.

Darkthrone is one of those bands that gets me going.

My version correlates with yours. It says:

"Fenriz: But we can make the bread and other people can make cake. But you grow tired of cake too. So we make ordinary bread."
"NC: It depends how long it is in the oven."

That Norwegian black metal documentary is really great. It allows non-BMers to understand why we are who we are

Dark Throne is really boring?I mean there is no musical evolution! I have 3 Dark Throne cd's and the only song that I listen to some rare times is 'Transilvanian Hunger'?I didn't even bother to go and listen the last one 'To old?'. There are so much better things than Dark Throne! I believe that the only reason why they are well known is because they were one of the first to play black metal. Well every one his own taste and opinon !

Well they forget to tell about Burzum and the fact that he is a large reason for huge amounts of black metal fans.

BUt other than that yes indeed. Actually that documentary was the one that made me interessted in black metal in general, I only heard a little dimmu borgir and stuff before I saw it aprox one year ago. (Yes I am new to the scene ^^).

Darkthrone... I love 'em. Transylvanian Hunger is my overall best BM album, but i like it all

@Sathur: another reason why Darkthrone are so amazing is Fenriz's (i think it was fenriz?) explanation in the interview on Transylvanian hunger: For Darkthrone BM is entirely about guitar riffs, everything else is secondary. Whereas with some bands like emperor more emphasis is put on other instruments and synths, Darkthrone have that grinding feeling of no-cheese darkness that is unique that only they managed.

Also i love the vocal delivery, holding up En Vind Av Sorg on Panzerfaust as an example. It's so rough and raw, and yet it retains an amazing capacity to convey all of the dark emotion tied up inside it. One can hear the hatred and despair, and you feel it inside even if your norwegian is as nonexistant as mine.

The fact they didnt focus on Buzum was one reason i liked it. Firstly it made it slightly different from the other documentaries and rather than being like the others which usually end up giving a negative stereotype to black metal, this one embraces it - showing the good elements to black metal and shows the fact that most BMers, even those with some extreme values, are just normal people.

Ave Sathanas!
The allegid female vocals on the Darkthrone albums I felt were pretty obvious that they were by one of the existing members, because they sound pretty awful lol. I love Darkthrone though, quite possibly my favourite bm band, I decided the other day to make a discography disc so I have 20 years of their music all compiled onto one disc, includes four demo "albums." I have the Transilvanian Hunger interview too, I suppose that is considered the digi-pack, the case itself seems rather cheap since it's some floppy-ass cardboard, the interview was amusing, Fenriz didn't really elaborate on that much, just kept on his portrayel of being "hardcore." Best albums have to be Under A Funeral Moon and I personally like Hate Them a lot because it's a bit slower in spots and I feel holds a bit more gloom than the other albums.

I've never heard of this Norwegian BM documentry, is it written or a video? Perhaps I'll do a search on google.

i would'nt say they do not evolve. To me almost every Darkthrone album sounds different.

One thing i higly despise about this band though is how they have been covered by almost every other bm band in the world. We heard Transylvanian Hunger's covers way too often already.

The last album is awesome. The KVLT is alive.

That was really funny, but darkthrone are always entertaining I have read few interviews you can't now if they is joking or not. A firm and legendary band.

Fenriz indeed has a good sense of humor. Recently I was taking a look at his biographical data at Wikipedia and I found this:

"In Oslo, Norway, black metal bars and pubs are popular tourist attractions for "black metal tourists." Fenriz commonly plays pranks on these fans by entering the Rick pub on Elm street wearing pink pants."

The guy destroys the poor tourist's magic atmosphere of grimness with this.

If you listen to some celtic frost you would soon see (or hear) where the influence for the "female" backing vocals arose from, and Darkthrone's best album is a blaze in the northern sky, and panzerfaust and under afuneral moon ( i digress) they don't make bad albums, they will forever have kult status to people who have been into this stuff forever, as for the youtube doco, as it was a norwegian video show they would have already been all too familiar with ole varg by that stage, what do you think prompted the thing to be aired in the first place...

Classical Black Metal band. Their albums such as: A Blaze..., Under A..., Transilvanian... are the purest forms of that genre. Whatever they did in Black Metal music, they did it well... In my opinion, Darkthrone has special sense which allows make at least good Black Metal...

Darkthrone can't be just another black metal band, like some people wrote, because they are pioneers of the genre, they in my opinion created one part of black metal sound. Beside that they are everything but classical black metal, on first album you can hear everything but, at least by definition, black metal, and new albums are deeply into punk with almost trashy vocals. Of cause that they can sound like another black band to many people and it is quite normal, but they are amog first black metal bands I ever listened and since now I never heard band that I can compare with them in any way..
