Yes, you really can't call them just another BM band because all the others you'd be referring to are just bands who wish they were Darkthrone. They started it all.

I just read here that Darkthrone have finished writing new songs and are about to start the mastering process for their next album, which apparentely will either be called Fuck Off and Live Forever or Fuck Off and Die. Nocturno Culto said that they picked up where they left off with The Cult is Alive. If that's the case, this should be a great album.

Hmmmm, Yeah, I agree, the Cult Is Alive, although very differnt to their older albums, is still a very good release. Lyrically, the album is very different aswell, but Im a fan of that....

Definetely different album. It is even more punk than before, but Darkthrone always had that punk element, altough many people refuse to accept that, I mean, just listen to the Ablaze In The Northern Sky or Total Death, some parts of songs are totally punk. Lyrics are very good to me, some people mind that there are not like on some albums (thematics) but who cares as long as they are good

Fortunately, Darkthrone still play for themselves and not for the scene. That's the reason I like everything they release - punk, black, death, thrash or other stuff. They have the talent to make everything perfect, and also, the idea - "If you don't like us - fuck off" is perfect for musicians, who are not sunk in the commersial sea.

I have to give The Cult Is Alive a good listen soon. I haven't heard it for quite some time and never actually heard it entirely, but I remember not liking it too much. You just can't beat old Darkthrone, even though the material is different.

well, I am sure that Fenriz and Nocturno are reading this board right now, are crushed because some random guy doesn't like anything they've released in the last decade, and are going to run right back to the studio to re-record their new album to your specs.

The funniest thing about this exchange and you being so vocal about hating that album?

THEY MADE IT TO PISS OFF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

The Cult is Alive was at least something refreshing. A band doesn't need to do the same thing over and over again in their entire carrier. The Cult is Alive is enjoyable, but it is very different. More catchy, a bit more "braindeath" compared with the old classics, but does it matter? The old classics weren't that good anyway. I never understood why the fans of black metal gave such high praise to it, plus that a million bands had the need to copy it.

oh, and using on a serious forum comments like "ROTFL " doesn't make you win an argument.

Oh, of course not.

There is a difference between folks who just don't like it - their ear, their opinion - and those who continue to vociferously bash everything the diabolic duo has released over the past 10 years.

The album (and particularly "Shut Up") are directed at the later...

(I'm half convinced the only reason a good chunk of people blast everything after Panzerfaust is because it is cool to do so, much like blasting nu-metal, dimmu borgir, cradle of filth, dani filth, 'posers', etc.. Over the five or six albums prior to "The Cult is Alive", did they really change anything about their craft aside from production values? Vocals are still harsh, still simplistic drumming/riffing. still only two guys, a guitar and a drum kit - no chorus, no symphony. same basic lyrical contents. still a lot of songs in norwegian)

It is a fist in the face of the stodgy.

I agree about everything you wrote, and especially about how it is popular to spit on some bands, people, geres...
It is big difference if someone don't like the album and say I don't like it because of that and this, and people who say it sucks, it is not Darkthrone...

I agree with a lot of that, but I think their older stuff is the simplest. Fenriz doesn't sound like a monotonous robot anymore, and the newer stuff has more riffs in the songs.

yeah, there are some nice little rolls/fills on "tCiA" Fenriz sounds a bit more bombastic behind the kit at times.

as for the riffing - i like both their approaches.

with their later works, particularly "ravishing grimness" and "plaguewielder" it seemed like Nocturno just sort of stretched riffs oooouuuuutttttt to consume time and space at points. To some that is bad, but I like ambient music, so appreciate it a bit.

"Hate Them" and "Sardonic Wrath" both showed a little more of the Punk influence - not nearly as overtly as "The Cult is Alive", but enough that i took notice.

"tCiA" just really pushed it from a slight influence to an obvious one... really energized them. it's like it skipped a couple steps in a slowly moving evolutionary process and just moved at warp speed to the conclusion of where the path their last four albums was leading them.

The EP Too old, too Cold and The Cult is alive IMO are the best releases of the band after Ravishing Grimness. And songs like Too Old, Too Cold and Shut Up are for all posers around the world who are new to the black scene.... Most of the true bands vanished, defeated by commerce, but there are still few warriors.

I quite liked 'The Cult Is Alive', it's so much fun to listen to! I understand why people like Hembrom wouldn't like it, it's not really Black Metal, and very different from all their previous releases, but I like the fact that they tried to inject some new stuff to their sound, while effectively telling the current Black Metal scene "fuck you." Fenriz has said many times that he doesn't really feel proud to be a Black Metaller any more, and the band has made what I think to be a really cool album.

On a side note, Nocturno Culto is totally Fenriz' bitch. I can just imagine him asking, begging, "can we please play some live shows?" and Fenriz just responding with a "fuck you."
