Doc's Top 20 (Metal) Albums Of All Time

My top-20 all time favorite (metal) albums. Obviously subject to change over long periods of time. Left out most recent finds - these are albums that have resonated with me for at least a few years.

I never thought I'd see Kolossus on anyone's top list haha. I like it.

I think I know what you're feeling. It's a strange album, but very lovable. It's hard to explain haha

Execution Tank on #1 has been a top 5 track for me forever now, totally in love with that song. Was playing a bunch of old unmarked mix CDs I had in my car not too long ago and it's on like 90 percent of them at least.

I don't see what's not to love, it's like fast deadly riffs on riffs with epic songs and production that (for the type of black metal it is) works really well. Obscura is a good pick too, since initially loving it but thinking it had some flaws, I have come around to the opinion that Omnivium is one of the better tech death albums ever. Good amount of variety on it.

As far as Kolossus goes - it's got really thick production, while still being gritty. The way they achieve the epic atmosphere without resulting to cheap tactics (in other words, drowning the whole thing in orchestra synths) is one of the big draws for me. A lot of people hated the vocals on that one, but I feel the balance between clarity and grit fit the music perfectly.

Obscura - yeah, that album has a lot of details and depth, making it one with lots of replay value, but also great when it comes to baser riff appeal. I'm usually not into tech-death, but Omnivium is a versatile little album. I didn't dig Cosmogenesis or Retribution as much, otherwise Obscura would be a favorite for me.

I had a similar thing going with "All Of Them Witches"

Totally agree man. I haven't even heard Cosmogenesis or Retribution in full but I have heard enough tech-death to know Omnivium will pretty much always be a favourite for me. I also listened to about half of The Varangian Way today and despite the listen getting interrupted I pretty much shat my balls. another example of epicness done right although different from the Kolossus type.

Yes. Holy shit yes. I absolutely hate the random orchestra stuff that has been getting jammed where it doesn't belong. I am a big fan of using traditional nuts and bolts to create an epic sound. This is why I love Moonsorrow so much.
As for Obscura, Omnivium was a huge grower for me. It took me a few listens to realize it was actually good, and then I was blown away by how varied it was. Ocean Gateways is one of my favorite songs ever. Retribution is still my favorite Obscura album however.

The bassline on Ocean Gateways has to be a highlight on that album for me. Jeroen Paul Thesseling's fretless bass really shines on that one.

Yeah, I'm interested to see what the new guy brings to the table though, along with the rest of the new members.

Hopefully something interesting. Thesseling has a distinct style...Which I doubt will be able to be matched in distinctness. Obscura has been going through so many huge changes lately I don't have high hopes.

EDIT: Expanded the list to 20. Decided Danzig was "metal" enough for the list, but couldn't bring myself to cut anything.

Nice to see Opeth - Still Life, one of my favourite albums by them as well. Unexpected somehow

Indeed. It's literally the only album I like from this list. And in this particular case, by "like" I mean I think it's a brilliant album.

It's my favourite Opeth album after MAYH. As for the list, I think the only other album I like from it is Obscura's Omnivium. He did mention Protest The Hero which is another band I like but not particularly that album. Different tastes

The only albums i would put on list of my own are Danzig and Opeth. Blind Guardian too, but not that album. Still, this is a very cool list!

I like three things about this list - variety of styles, decent length and picking Inferno/Forever Abomination as the best from the respective bands.
That makes me seriously think about trying something i don't know yet from the list...is it sorted somehow?

I've only given it a brief listen thus far, I enjoyed it, but lets say it probably won't be very high on my "2015 list". I'll elaborate more on your review page.
