Dunno how it took me so long to figure out but this is by far the best QotSA record. Might lack a killer song (though 'You Can't Quit Me Baby' ain't far from one) but has the most consistent set of songs I've heard them put out yet. Every track is awesome.

Quite disagree here - I easily prefer the two after the s/t as here I find almost half the tracks to be lacking (and never listen to the last). Mexicola and Hispanic Impressions are easily my fav songs here, Quit also quite good but I think it's a bit longer than it needs to be

In saying all that, I haven't listened to it for ages and could change my opinion like I just did with Kataklysm's Victims, though I really doubt it. I don't see why QotSA's lyrics would be as centrally important as with that album, or Korn, Sonic Syndicate or Deftones - for whom my respect has also changed in the last couple weeks by focussing on the lyrics (going up for all except the last)

edit - cross out the second "easily" from my first paragraph. The first three tracks are about as great as 7-9, and 4-6 don't lag all that far behind 1-3. Still can't give it a 10, or even a 9, now just due to tracks 10 & 11

edit 2yrs after original post - I just read the lyrics, and... they're horrible, heh. (Kinda similar themes to the aforementioned bands, to my surprise.) Good music, still, now 10's not so bad either; just hope I can block out the mental images. Love the openers, though they're a bit forgettable compared to what came with a few years' maturation (...I am this close to agreeing with Joe's next words v )

I've found recently that I never listen to the following up albums to this one right the way through and there's frequent track skipping; there'a an awful lot of pointless filler and novelty elements and fewer (though admitedly excellent) proper tracks. As I said this one may lack a killer track but they all mesh extremely well together and maintain that slightly downtrodden stoner feel throughout each song.

Also just noticed this record has the highest rating on Discogs so I'm not as alone in my assertion as I thought I was. I never hear people talk about this record.

Hmm, Deaf has some weaker songs but I'd still say it's just about perfect all the way through...

Do you listen to 'em under the influence? And have you heard this one's remaster? I'm a no for both... would probably get the remas though if I lost my CD

Nope, I'm not big on smoking (or rather smoking isn't big on me: vomit central) and haven't tried it with anything else. I couldn't tell you what version I have I'm afraid, it sounds like it might be a remastered version, or at least it doesn't sound like it needs remastering. Not really a lot of help there am I?

Haha, I don't think it needed remastering but it was re-released last year or something... actually now I'm wondering/hoping if they did something to improve (remove? ) the final track. There should almost definitely be a better booklet included... oh well, maybe I'll pick it up anyway. I keep putting off buying the later ones cos I can't decide which version to get

...Anyone know what Homme is doing these days? I would guess more Eagles stuff...

I've only really listened to 'Rated R' and 'Songs for the deaf' properly, but its interesting that their debut sounds every bit as fresh and innovative as those two. It may not resemble as much variety, but it makes up for it through the combination of catchy melodic hooks, and hypnotic tones such as the closing track.
