These days it can tend to be rare to come across bands that are both entirely original while also not too far out there with their quirkiness, and that combine the best of both the familiar and the unconventional. Greece's Hail Spirit Noir already added to the list of such bands with their 2012 effort Pneuma, easily one of the best debuts of the year. With Oi Magoi they now stand poised to take their sound in a perhaps more sophisticated direction.

I agree. You'd think with how much people value good psychoblack around here, they'd know the difference between the crop and the crap.

Yet, you still give this a 9...

I didn't say "always".

Because it remains one of my favorite albums of 2014 and features what I find is some of the most unique, creative and memorable songwriting this year. I still wake up in the morning with some of the album's riffs in my head. I just feel that its a perfect blend of psych rock, cult horror, and black metal.

In contrast, I checked out Pneuma after I discovered this (why wouldn't I?) and I was really disappointed that it didn't take me on a magical journey as well. I might need to listen to it again based on the fact that I have literally forgotten what the entire album sounds like. From what I recall though, I felt that the songwriting had some cool ideas but needed...room to grow and mature, not sure how to explain it... but its something that Oi Magoi succeeds in.

Totally agreed about Oi Magoi. Pneuma is good, but definitely not as good as this album.

You generally have a much better taste in music than this. What, pray tell, prompted you to give this absolutely ordinary album a 9? At most, I *generously* give this a 7. (I don't mean for this comment to be offensive or arrogant- I'm just curious about what makes this album cross the line for you).

It's still funny how people measure other people's taste simply by comparing their taste to their own. The more it matches their own taste, the "better" the taste of others is.

Quote:

Erik: As for the whole Alex, mz and !J.O.O.E.! thing?please drop it for all future threads. All of these are threads about albums and we should continue discussing the albums. If you want to discuss the personalities of MS, feel free to find another venue for that. If you're that desperate, feel free to send me a message and we can chat about it privately. I don't think we're on the same page about it at all, but it's a reasonable thing to discuss if it means the topic doesn't come up as often on these threads.

I don't see what this has got to do with you and why you would want to discuss it. I simply stated a general observation, nothing more, nothing less. Noticing other people's votes is extremely easy and seeing as Joe, mz and Alex have very similar tastes, they often comment on the same albums and therefore it's easy to notice their opinions are similar as well, in a lot of cases.

Fair enough. I didn't really find that the blend worked (and I also didn't hear too much cult horror in this, to be perfectly honest). I should give it another listen, though. Maybe, as IronAngel mentioned, it's simply not something I dig and I haven't listened to it since the month it came out because I'm lazy. I personally found that the tracks lack something substantial?I don't really feel satisfied listening to Hair Spirit Noir. I would assume that's probably why prominent members of the MS community are not liking this album.

Another thing I should mention- I didn't like Pneuma either. HSN have not convinced me at all. By all means let me know if you get any insights into the album that could open it up to me.

That's a bit dramatic, actually. I've found some awesome music with Fearmeister and his lists, and I very rarely see him disagree with me on a thread by a full two points on the MS score. So given that precedent, I was surprised to see his score for HSN (which he'd classify in the same realm as many other fantastic albums). I wouldn't say we have similar tastes at all really, and I don't really think mine is better than his. It was a reactionary response to an odd rating and an interest in his response, and not an assertion that his taste is worse because it differs from mine. I'm glad he gave a nice little response and I've learned from it- he thinks the combination of styles works and that's probably where my impression differs the most. We managed to get some conversation out of it and it contributed towards discussion related to HSN- unlike your little reply here.

That literally has nothing to do with the album, though. My motivation for the comment was simply to stop this becoming a topic of conversation on the threads, and that was really explicit in my original comment. We introduce topics of conversation to provoke further discussion related to the album on MS. Please tell me how the three users you mentioned relate to Hail Spirit Noir's album in any way. Their opinions are indeed similar for this album- did this alter your impression of the album? Did this relate to anything HSN did musically? Did it somehow impact your rating of the album?
Now if your comment about the three users doesn't relate to HSN in any tangible way, you should politely refrain from expressing it on the thread and instead find someone else to talk to about it if you really want to express it. The most important part of this is: just stop. What's the point of even bringing up that comment when you literally get a mixed response every time you do it? Let's say the users have the same rating 80% of the time. Who actually gives a shit?

It's actually a huge improvement from their previous record which to me it sounded very hard to perceive, but this one is of the most well-structured albums in 2014, perhaps their only downside here is the vocal lines.

I know I'm digging up year-old dirt, but it may be that he was doing it for the mixed response

I've calmed down a little bit since then, but I think you're right on the money here. It just became a really annoying theme of dialogue that was obviously not going anywhere, so I (very assertively) tried to nip it in the bud, haha.

This might be too much hipster even for me. Their relation to Satan seems very shallow. It confuses me a bit that the music is average to good despite the shalllow relationship.

Define "hipster" in the context of Hail Spirit Noir. You haven't been reading wikipedia again, have you...?

Imo the second wave of BM had a more interesting relationship to Satan than this is. Why use a satanic theme, when its shallowness shines through? At least for the sake of art make it a bit less shallow. So hipster in this context is using a theme just because its cool with satanism. Not a bad album though.
