This is so good. I slept on the last one, but 'Mouvement' is pretty stunning.

Did not expect this album to be so violent. The opener kicked my face in.

Better go buy a 12 pack before listening as this is near off the charts on the "take a drink for pretentiousness" scale.

I mean it's not like they haven't done it before, some moments on Transient and Tone Of Things To Come especially fucking rip.
I got the promo too and am going at it tonight. First impression I can definitely say it feels as though the abrasiveness and the meditative, ritualistic moments are blended together better. As much as I love those "Interzone" tracks from the other releases there's really none of that here where those more droney, shamanic tracks are just standing alone in between the heavier shit. It's way more of a blend and is sounding excellent thus far.

What if one of the members is a poet behind the scenes and legitimately wrote those lines before the album during some sort of profound artistic experience, and then rearranged them as the track names?
Wait, no, not possible because everything we see from artists these days that suggests even the most minor degree of intellectualism must be a bluff.

Poet rearranging words is possible. Suggestions of intellectualism aren't a bluff - many artists might be smart, many just knuckledraggers. NO need to go absolutist. How employed is what catches my eye. Bard Religion is a mighty smart band, with members holding advanced degrees and who write intelligent lyrics. Then they have "Against The Grain" which reads like Roget jizzed his thesaurus juice all over the album. this just seems to be going up ATG alley.

I understand man, no real salties here. I dunno, as an artist myself it just kind of bugs me sometimes when people use that to describe art, because it's kind of like "well are you inside the person's head, can you really gauge their intelligence like that and how 'about it' they really are?" A lot of times you can't, but I get how some artists might imply that they're just trying to put on their pseudo-MIT glasses more so than others.

Early AOTY status for sure. Very eager to see what else 2018 may have in store that can serve as a challenger though.

I can't really remember the last album, but according to my 2015 list I thought it was decent if not that up my street, and I think I felt similar about seeing them at Roadburn in 2016. On balance I probably feel a bit more positive about this one; I don't love it, and I don't really like the opening track, but the almost trance-like vibe given off by the more psychedelic-oriented parts (particularly song 2 - cba to write out the title) did more successfully draw me in

I would have liked it more if it had some abresive parts or if it surprised me in some way. And it would have been better if the instruments were a bit disjointed at times, in a jazzy way. Then there is the song structure that becomes a bit too organized and sounds almost as regular post-rock as it is. And as this isnt a particulary dark album the ritualistic parts becomes a bit of a cliche. I guess its a good album though.

Yep, this is a bit more like it: good consistency and flow. I was a bit concerned that this would be a bit too death metal oriented, but thankfully it slides effortlessly into numerous sounds and styles whilst maintaining a fairly cohesive identity throughout. The drums are classic Chaos Echoes too, which give it a really unusual sense of urgency.
Unlike that guy ^ I'm glad this doesn't simply fall back on mindless abrasiveness: too many bands throw cheap dissonance into their music these days. These guys do it with clever composition instead.
