Even today I filtered by year on MS and found another band I've never heard of before (Autumn), which I can't say I love from today's perspective, but it still sounds way better than most sympho releases of 2026.

For metal specifically I'd say the best years are 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2012

I mean, who'd argue that Once and The Silent Force are genre classics? :) And these are just tip of the iceberg.

Yeah, nostalgia definitely has a part in it, but 2004 wasn't the year when I started (it was around 2-4 years before) and it still is like a "magic number" for so many of the albums and bands I loved at the time.

For me it is 1995-2006 ... The bulk of my 9s and 10s come from this period. Maybe it was just being a teenager, but it seemed like pretty much every other week there was a genre classic being released.

I'm curious if anyone else has a "special year" in music (or in specific genres). Every time I dig into my collection, I'm amazed by the amount of great sympho metal albums that came out in 2004. Maybe I should make a list...
